My local post office used to have vending machines from which I could buy stamps at 3am or avoid the lines during the day. Then one day it was gone. They said it was from orders above.
It seems like most (all?) of the services done by the friendly but noticeably unhurried staff could be done by machines. At the same time that the grocery store was automating the checkout process the USPS was regressing to a more labor intensive process.
