Squawking in Memphis
Restaurateurs banned guns on Beale Street. The enacted security measures in response to the law-abiding being able to carry there. Not before, when the non-law-abiding were the ones carrying there. Anyway, this made me laugh:
There’s a lot less traffic on Beale Street … which made it a lot more enjoyable
Obviously, searching your patrons is good for business.

Beale Street is one of the biggest dumps I’ve ever been to – went there for the first (and only) time ever a few months ago.
The streets were barricaded off, and there were quasi-looking wannabe police type people that were more interested in kicking it with the bouncers in a side alley along with the … local entertainment.
The denizens still prowled the street completely unafraid of any presence by the law, and never hesitated to yell and confront you face on in the middle of the street for money, even with people watching.
You wonder why it has the largest number of carry permit holders in Tennessee – I found out firsthand.

I never go there after dark.
Rarely go there in the daylight.

Sad to hear about this. The only time I was there was back in 2000 and I enjoyed the atmosphere. One incident still makes me laugh, like most people on the street I was walking along drinking a large draft beer in a plastic cup. I saw a storefront police station and looked in the window. They had several displays of historical police equipment that looked interesting, but I wasn’t sure how they would react to the beer. I stuck my head in cautiously, the desk sergeant looked up at me, and I said that I would like to look at the displays, but what about the beer? He said just be careful and don’t spill it on the exhibits. Sounds like that wouldn’t happen these days.

Meh, Beale’s not that bad. Not noticeably different from any other city’s entertainment district, apart from the fact that there’s more live music and you can carry your beer out on the street.
If Beale scares you away, then I implore you never to get within twenty clicks of Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Why would anybody in his right mind go to New Orleans unless forced to do so? Ok, ok, I’ve been only once voluntarily, the rest were unavoidable, believe me.

As Chris Rock said:
“Don’t go to parties with metal detectors. Sure it feels safe inside, but what about all those ni##ers waiting outside with guns? They know you ain’t got one.”
