Unpossible
In Milwaukee, a man carrying a handgun shoots and kills a would be robber. Wisconsin is one of two states that has no provision for lawful concealed carry. Open carry is, apparently, legal there. From the report, it’s not clear if he was carrying openly. I would imagine that if he was, his robbers may have noticed and opted for a softer target.
Defensive gun use in Harlem, where you have to have a permit to carry a gun and they don’t really give those out.

Love this, from one of the NY Times commenters on the article:
3 shots, 4 casualties. 72-year old man, supposedly from a sitting position too. Contrast with the typical police shooting, where highly-trained professionals empty 2 or 3 magazines and a fraction hit their mark. Maybe part of police training should include longs stints behind the counter of inner-city liquor stores and other businesses prone to hold-ups.

Either that, or grabbed the gun first.

The idea that people using guns for self-defense lose them to criminals frequently is mostly a myth, Xrlq.

The only thing that bothers me about the Harlem story is the possibility it could have been a tragedy.
The 72 year old dude bought and loaded the shotgun 20 years ago after another robbery, parked it under his desk, and didn’t touch it again for 20 years.
The tragedy could have been a rusted shut action – not 2 dead and 2 wounded bangers.
Oh, and when the local weepy/waily set showed up to place memorial candles in front of the store for the bangers, the kid who was pistol whipped kicked the candles into the street with many choice words.
