A North Port teenager fended off two burglars inside his North Port home during a daylight burglary, firing on them with a shotgun as they hopped a 6-foot fence to get away.
On Aug, 26, shortly before 9 a.m., Christopher Conte, 17, was awakened by the sound of his dog barking. He got up to get something to drink and saw two men behind his house pulling on ski masks. Conte ran to his bedroom and grabbed his shotgun.
According to police, the men barged into Conte’s bedroom as Conte was loading the gun. One of the men said, “Hands up,” and Conte reportedly turned on them, pointing the gun and saying, “You put your hands up.”
The would-be robbers ran away, Conte firing at them once as they jumped over a fence.
No one was hurt in the botched burglary.
Conte and a neighbor separately called 911 and police later arrested Drew Long, 20, and Klarel Avin, 23, both of North Port.
Each man faces one count of unarmed burglary of an occupied dwelling, a felony.
Avin posted $10,000 bail Aug. 26, and Long remained in Sarasota County Jail today on $10,000 bond.
