Heck, my Marlin Model 60 22LR with the tube magazine has been an assault weapon in the eyes of New Jersey since, well, as long as I’ve owned it. Which is one more reason I avoid New Jersey – it, like Maryland, is a silly place.
I just called The MD POlice and the assault rifle designation in MD just requires a 7 day waiting period like a handgun.
The law does not specify caliber so a .223 or a .22LR are not differentiated.
Similarly, I about fell over when I moved to California, and found that my Walther P22 was classified as an assault weapon. It’s black! You can put accessories on it! It has a threaded barrel nut!
Clearly this must be a dangerous tool of mass destruction, and must be regulated.

Typical of the Maryland Staats Gestapo.
