That is just one of the many reasons why I haven’t been on an airplane for over 4 years. I used to fly 8-10 times a year. But I reached the point where I just had my fill of dealing with the air travel industry’s BS. Too much hassle, too much trouble, too expensive, too uncomfortable.
The last time I was on an airplane I was settled into my seat and reading my book when the flight attendant started the safety video. In the middle of the video the flight attendant walked up to my seat, snatched the book out of my hand and snapped at me – “You need to pay attention to this.”
When I loudly started reciting the audio from the video about two words ahead of the video she got very red faced. When me, and the video, ended I told her “there is an emergency exit four rows ahead me and another one six rows a behind of me. In an emergency I will be using the one behind me because there is mostly younger adults between me and it. While the space between me and the door in front of me is filled with old folks, kids and fat people. No of which are going to be moving fast enough.”
She responded by throwing the book back into my lap and stomping off up the aisle while most of the folks (except the ones in front of me) laughed.
Any industry that empowers their emplyees to treat their customers that way does not deserve my business. At that point I decide that I do not NEED to fly. I have other options and I have used them since then.
Wouldn’t know. Haven’t flown commercially since 2001. I figure I’d need a pretty good reason to endure the security theater BS, and well, I haven’t yet found a reason good enough to want to be treated like a prison inmate instead of a customer.
They’ve _always_ charged for checked bags; it’s just that they previously “hid” the charge in the ticket price.
Like Lyle, I haven’t flown since 2001. Until they drop the security theater BS, I’m pretty sure I’ll never fly anywhere — and I work as an engineer at the company that built most of the (passenger) airplanes flying. I’d really like to see a general boycott of flying until they do drop it but a nation of people that would do that would not tolerate the government we have now (or any of its variations going back several decades).

Welcome to the new world of air travel! If you can do Southwest, they’re the only ones left that don’t charge for checked bags.

Prices have gone up due to the recession. People don’t have as much money to spend, so sellers are charging more for things. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

Two words: “fly Southwest”

I am wondering if I will have a bag fee to go to El Salvador next week.
My flight is not cheap.
And Southwest does not fly there…
