FBI and F Troop have been at each others’ throats for decades. Remember the screw up at Oklahoma City where ATF was removing FBI evidence tags and putting ATF markings on pieces of the truck?
In Lafayette, Indiana someone drove a truck bomb into the county courthouse in August of 1998 (this was at the time when FBI was demanding taggants in gunpowder–guess what the bomb in the Tippecanoe County Courthouse was made of?). The 10 year statute of limitation expired in August 2008 despite someone driving a truckload of evidence into a courthouse, even though ATF and FBI were assigned the taskforce and reportedly did not “see eye to eye.”

Fold the ATF back into the FBI. Or….stop worrying about alcohol and tobacco and let the 2nd Amendment be the law of the land. And then let the FBI worry about crime….

Fire the BATFE. Give the FBI a budget increase to handle bomb investigations and felon firearm trafficking.
Use Brady checks only at sales, get rid of the 4473.
Let the IRS handle NFA taxes … make them collect all offered tax payments, without doing any investigation, as required by the Hughes May 1986 amendment to the NFA.

I’ve heard about that before (not this article, but the dispute in general). Two law enforcement agencies with overlapping jurisdiction isn’t a recipe for harmony.
I agree with part of the above: fire the ATF and eliminate their functions. Policing alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives is not something that needs a full time federal police agency under our constitution. The FBI already has a bomb squad, that’s part of the problem, so they shouldn’t need a large budget increase.
I’d actually rather keep the ATF as is for now than fold it into the FBI. BATFE may someday get eliminated or curtailed if enough dirt comes to light, but combining the agencies would pass for reform to politicians, and we’d get to keep the ATF under a different name.
