Bison Armory

You observant folks may have noticed their ad over there on the left for a while. And since Kevin and Derek both sorta let the cat out of the bag, I’ll go ahead and mention it. I’m part-owner/partner with Bison Armory. The other half (or rather more than half) is Carnaby.

Bison Armory specializes in 6.8SPC barrels and custom uppers. And I took one to the Gun Blogger Rendezvous for folks to have fun with. With the upper, folks were pinging a steel plate consistently at 400 yards with open sights. Including Phil from Britain who’d never fired an AR before. We auctioned the upper off to benefit Project Valour IT and it was won by Larry from Brownells.

How to help

One of the questions that I asked of Alan Gura was how to best help the cause? Actually, I didn’t ask that. A few readers left comments and sent me emails asking that. So, I figured I’d pose the question to Alan. That’s when Alan told us a few things about Heller and how they decided from the beginning that they would not take donations or money from other groups. May not have been the most effective but I do understand why they did it. Kevin mentioned it in part here.

Alan said that the best way to fight is by giving to the Second Amendment Foundation. The SAF is now funding the legwork for Gura’s gun cases, such as the Chicago Gun Case.

So, head on over to their donation page and help out.

A big round of thanks

A lot of folks and organizations contributed to the Gun Blogger Rendezvous and I’d like to thank them.

Larry Weeks of Brownell’s. He’s been to all but the first one, I believe. Larry is a helluva a guy and his company is one of the biggest and best out there for your gunny needs.

A big thanks to Alan Gura for coming out. I appreciated his talk to the group. He was very candid and straightforward in discussing the issues. And he was a fun guy to hang out with.

ParaUSA for helping out with Kevin’s giveaway and for donating a handgun to the event. I put a magazine through the GI Expert and it shoots quite well, I thought.

LuckyGunner for two reasons: 1) for helping out with the raffle when PayPal let us down. And 2) for their ammo selection. If it’s on the site, it is in stock.

Rachel from NRA ILA. Rachel should get a round of applause just for being willing to stand up in front of a bunch of folks who have such tough questions for her.

Dan from Cheaper Than Dirt, which by the way has a blog that I didn’t know about.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation and Bill Brassard, who writes for the NSSF blog.

Glock for sending out some goodie bags.

Crimson Trace for sending all kinds of swag.

Hi Point firearms for donating a firearm that isn’t even available to the public yet.

Photo Ninja

Derek from The Packing Rat is a most excellent photographer. And you never know he’s taking pictures of you. He’s stealthy like that. And he can shoot steel pretty darn well too. Anyway, I greatly enjoyed perusing his photos from the GBR. He has lots of photos from Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3. Day 3 has a quite a few videos too. He snagged this photo of me shooting Larry from Brownells tricked out STI with brass in the air and apparently on target – or close:

Even more GBR pics

Photos from show and tell.

Quite a few photos here.

Some dork in a hideous shirt. But the gun is pretty slick.

This makes the third person I know of who says there’s no way 2M people showed up.

Guns and Crime

In 2008, there were some laxed gun laws and the tail end of the great Obama gun rush. And, turns out, violent crime rates are the lowest recorded. And places that have gun bans saw an increase.

Joe says:

This was in the presence of a huge economic downturn which usually is an indicator for increased crime rates. So either gun ownership isn’t positively correlated with crime (and in fact is negative associated with crime rates) or there is some other driving factor which observers don’t know about or want to talk about.

This internet thing might be catching on

Gunbroker does $1B in sales.

GBR IV Stuff

Pics of a Brit with a gun. Yes, we had someone from where Great Britain used to be show up at our gun blogger event.

Some gun porn

Molly can shoot! Lots of guys were feeling bad for getting beat by a 13 year old girl.

Silencer Shoot

AAC is having a silencer shoot this year. They’ll be raffling a bunch of cool toys. You can see those toys here. And here’s quite a few demo guns.

Is that a machine gun?

A 1911 with two triggers!

Two things I agree with Obama about

Killing terrorists and that Kanye West is a jackass.

Update: Ashley reminds me he supports a playoff system in college football. So, that’s three.

Quitters

More mayors quitting Bloomberg’s anti-gun group.

Wowza

Not really accessed a PC in a few days. The old feed reader had 1,100 unread entries. I hit mark all as read. So, if I missed anything important, let me know.

Indicators

Using the price of AK47 as an economic indicator in Afghanistan.

See bread, buttered

Anti-gun guy talks about investing in gun companies. Short version: It’s against my principles but if I can make a buck off you right wing nut jobs, then cool. The interesting bit was the data and the spin that S&W, for example, was collapsing because gun sales are starting to decline and many back orders are being canceled. We’ll see.

Glock in the press

Looks like Businessweek ran a rather unflattering piece on Glock, alleging they hide profits in shell companies. But there is also a lot of good info in the piece. Massad Ayoob doesn’t think the piece is anti-gun and he actually did some shooting with the reporter.

Mayors against guns

NRA targets GA Mayor. And it seems the group has lost several members recently.

Gun advice

Steve: What is the best gun for a wheelchair using woman?

We had that discussion in 2005. Some good advice in comments.

Worn out

Light posting today but some stuff to follow. All nighters on planes suck.

In Cali.once again in a place where most of the stuff in my checked bags is illegal. Heck, I’m practically illegal here.
Red eye home. Such fun. What to do for eight hours in an airport with no wifi?

Flying back

At the airport. Sorry for the light blogging but little time.
