Meth labs and indoor hydroponic pot farms can both be detected by use of thermal imaging. Not that I’m saying either of those would be common in Tennessee!
Increasingly, I suspect that’s like asking, “Why do the police have helicopters?” or even “why do the cops have radios?”
Answer: the technology is no longer exotic and expensive. They might as well have it, and as it becomes more familiar, they’ll find more uses for it.
As with guns in the hands of citizens, the question isn’t “should they have access to this technology”; rather, it should be, “are they pursuing useful, constitutional ends?”
