Iron update

Yesterday, I mentioned the SRWare Iron web browser. Looks like I’ll be hitting the Firefox again. It crashed twice today, one time even giving me the Blue Screen of Death and requiring a reboot. Also, while it is fast and slick, I like the options for tabs in Firefox better. I really hate that middle click won’t open a closed tab and that closing the last tab closes the whole browser.

We’re winning

Bushmaster advertisement for AR-15s in issues of Maxim magazine:

From Gun Porn

Well, they do share the name of the inventor of the machine gun and sound suppressor. Also an ad for the Remington 870.

A few years back, I would never have imagined a men’s magazine catering to young men (some even say metrosexuals) would be advertising evil black rifles. Fantastic. Oh and go get your man card.

I think I’ve fallen back in love with Freedom Group.

Utility

Heh.

Suppressed Air Compressor

Yesterday, I brought my suppressor to work. Our engineering guys have a pretty high end air compressor and I use it to clean the sound suppressor. Any way, the air compressor is loud but when you blast air through the suppressor, it is not. I just thought that was neat. I mean, I guess I knew it should work since compressed air is a gas and all a suppressor does is slow down the gas as it exits. Still, it was pretty cool. And, of course, the exiting air wasn’t nearly as powerful as a direct blast.

Carry Methods

Shooting Illustrated’s Guns and Hunting has a look.

HSUS Stupidity

The Humane Society of the United States opposes carry of handguns because you might decide to go poaching:

in order to protect wildlife from poaching and ensure public safety, reverse final rule by Bush Administration that undid a longstanding ban on carrying of loaded, concealed weapons in National Parks; continue the historic prohibition on sport hunting in national parks, and prevent attempts to allow private sport hunters to target elk in Rocky Mountain National Park and Theodore Roosevelt National Park; oppose legislation like H.R. 1179, S. 917, and S. 684 in the 110th Congress that would open National Parks to sport hunters

Knife Stuff

The bill that clarifies the definition of switchblade has passed the senate.

Be heard

Gun Pundit has a survey:

Richard Mann is doing research for an article on the suitability of the .22 LR for personal protection.

Again?

NIH to start studying gun safety. I don’t really care so much until they, like the CDC, start politicizing instead of researching. Like that time CDC said gun laws have no impact on anything but we still need more of them.

AR v. AK

We’ve all seen AKs that are buried for years then dug up and shot. The guys at CavArms did that with an AR and an AK. The results are interesting.

Low expectations

Justice department: black people are too stupid to know who to vote for unless we tell them.

Think we’ll see any accusations of racism here?

Choices

A look at Stingray’s AR configuration. I need to get a fuzzy dice adapter, mine only takes six sided.

Epoxy to fix a boogered AR lower receiver. Should work on a non-stressed part. This is why it’s a good idea to put a wooden block behind the lower to support it when you’re driving in pins.

Cool Browser

Someone took Google Chrome and removed all the nonsense that allowed it to communicate with the mother ship and made a fine browser. SRWare Iron is pretty slick. If I find a decent download manager and a way to make it stop closing the application when I close the last tab, I may switch.

It’s fast. Real fast. And, unlike Firefox, the hotkeys in wordpress work.

Junior on anatomy

Last night, at bath time I was rinsing the kids, when Junior looks at me, points to her chest and says This is my booty. On by booty is a knuckle.

Glocks With Manual Safeties

Apparently, they don’t work so well:

The cops on the street must have been given a different gun because their pistols were having all sorts of problems. They had magazines randomly falling out of the guns, magazines refusing to drop out when the mag release was pressed, brass being ejected into the shooters face and just plain failing to cycle. The Portuguese IPSC community, where I believe Glocks are popular, were not at all surprised.

A few weeks ago the Portuguese media discovered that the police have signed a contract with Glock to retrofit all their pistols with normal, safety-less, Glock 19 frames.

They usually resort to dick jokes

Anthony:

The bimbo stated in explicit terms (which I will not use here) that the reason male shooters love their handguns so much is that it is our attempt to make up for what we lack below the belt, i.e., the ‘male member.’

I know, look at all these people compensating for the size of their penis.

Drop in police killed in line of duty

The AP:

The FBI says the number of police officers slain in the line of duty fell sharply last year.

Bureau statistics list 41 law enforcement officers killed in 2008. The list includes one FBI agent, Sam Hicks, who was shot and killed during a drug raid outside Pittsburgh.

Felony killings of police officers haven’t been that low since 1999, although police officer support groups — which use different standards to count officer killings — say the number of officers killed hasn’t been this low since the 1960s

It doesn’t fit the narrative though so don’t expect a lot of reporting:

… considering it occurred during a year where concealed carry permit applications skyrocketed nationwide, along with the sale of ammunition, handguns, and so-called assault rifles.

Gun sales went up, and the killing of law enforcement officers went down. Just another inconvenient truth.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
