The Droid You’re Looking For

A review of Verizon’s Droid, a gizmo to compete with the iPhone. If it weren’t for AT&T, I’d have an iPhone. Now, I may not even get one.

Since we’re moving soon and AT&T’s coverage is *ahem* less than adequate, I’ve been keeping my eye out for new phones from Verizon and Sprint. I SO want a droid. It’s like an iPhone without the hype and with more features (never underestimate the ability to run multiple apps at once, it can be a lifesaver).

I’ve got the Palm Pre with Sprint. It’s Linux-based, just like Android, and has a pretty good homebrew app development community already, plus the ‘official’ app store. It also integrates with ‘push’ gmail and Google Calendar, and will import and sync contacts with gmail, facebook, or MS Exchange servers. Calendars and contacts also sync wirelessly and automatically.

It’s also cool that, with an easy setup beforehand, I can SSH from my PC into my phone over my WiFi at home, and transfer files wirelessly, too.

I certainly prefer the slide-out keyboard to the all-touch interface, as well as the minute keyboards offered by Palm and Blackberry phones.

I’m writing this on the T-moblie G1, the first incarnation of the Android phone. HUGE fan. Night and day from my BlackBerry. YouTube works, however, I’m still looking for Flash. A handheld computer I can use on the couch watching the tube is pretty dang neat.

Full disclosure. I own three Apple Computers and I love them. I am a huge fan of the iPhone. I have not met a better touch interface and the UI is the best.

I was a Verizon customer for 10 years before I got my iPhone. I feel the network quality in and around Portland Oregon is the same.

If I had to give up my iPhone I would probably head for the Palm Pre (but I don’t like Sprint). Likewise, I have nothing bad to say about Verizon’s network but they seem to have a dinosaur approach to what devices they allow on their network and what OSs those devices are running.

I’ve got an old RAZR and was going to upgrade to the HTC Imagio in December when I’m up for contract renewal. Fortunately the Droid came out just in time to change my mind.

We are BIG Apple users (writing and design work) and I have steadfastly refused to move to an iPhone because of AT&T’s network. Even in New York City, with cellular infrastructure out the wazoo, AT&T drops calls. They suck. I pre-ordered the Android phone and I can’t wait to get it. If it is what every review I have come across claim it is, the iPhone either needs to get on other networks or Apple is going to be shut out of Verizon for good.

I like Windows Mobile for my smart phone needs.

Not new or exciting, but there tends to be lots of support for them, both officially and user based, as well as a ton of free apps you can install by, you know, downloading them from the inter tubes directly to the phone via your data connection or wifi.

Some of the time the hard ware sucks, but that’s a problem with the phone producers, not the OS.

  9. Laurel Says:

I *just* upgraded to an iPhone. I can’t help it – I’m surprised I held out this long. I’m an Apple fanatic.

That said, I’m also a big fan of open source, and not a very big fan of AT&T’s network (though I’ve heard their customer service is vastly superior to Verizon’s, and would agree with that based on my Verizon DSL anyway) – so I may consider whatever Verizon/Android is putting out there two years down the road when I’m ready to upgrade again.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
