I think it might just be early adopters, ’cause I’m in now and don’t believe I have invites yet.
I’m not using it for actual voice features, but it’s perfect for free SMS. If I have to shell out $30 a month for data on this beast, you better believe I’m NOT giving AT&T $20 more for unlimited texting.
In case anyone’s curious, I set it up on the iPhone thusly:
1. Got GV number.
2. Got GV app.
3. Got Yahoo! email address.
4. Set up email addy on iPhone.
5. Forwarded SMS messages to email.
6. Tell lazy friends to only text GV number.
6. Profit! …errr, no. Not that part.
The Yahoo! addy is the trick, because it’s the only protocol I know of that will push to the iPhone. So, I get instant notification of the incoming SMS, and then can reply by email or pop over to the GV app to reply.
I mean, that’s what I would do if I jailbroke my phone. And I would neeeever do THAT.
Gmail apparently will now push emails to your iPhone. The voice bit is handy as I get poor reception at home and can automatically route calls to the landline. Also, transcribing voice mail messages to text is pretty handy too.

I got onto Google Voice just by requesting it from the main website. It took a couple of days, then I got an email telling me I was good to go.
I have had a gmail account for a few years now, I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it or not…
