Isolationism
A couple of unpopular wars and people get their libertarian on.
At the moment, I think a lot of us want to be isolated from our government.

The a difference between isolationism and non-interventionism.

“At the moment, I think a lot of us want to be isolated from our government.”
That would be due to another unpopular (with some of us anyway) war: the war on liberty. While this particular war has been going on since before history started being written down, there really is no excuse for the U.S. government being on the wrong side.

Or, people could just be reacting to the fact that the Commander-in-Chief can no longer be trusted to follow through on any military commitment through victory.
Just sayin’.

Wars should be fought with a heavy and brutal hand against our aggressors. Sitting down with our foes over tea and sympathy comes after we have crushed them.
As far as my (this) government, I’d not be upset if they never knew I existed and treated with me with benign neglect.
Hey, I can dream, can’t I?

I believe a substantial reason for this is our fiscal situation; we’re in a position not unlike the 1930s.
We have an economic situation likely to decline into the Greater Depression, combined with many threats to freedom that we cannot afford to fight all at once.

I think the poll results could be described as an unholy combination of pacifists, defeatists and true isolationists, rather than general isolationism. Pacifists, the give peace a chance crowd who don’t believe in armed self-defense. Defeatists, the anti-American crowd who thinks America should lose. And the paleo-conservative plus libertarian true isolationists.
