A little bit of a different close
A lot of other bloggers do something to close out Friday. I never have because, while blogging is light on the weekends, I do blog some. Most bloggers seem to do some musical number. So, I will stick with that. As folks may or may not know, I like music that’s heavy. And I mean heavy. Whatever you think you listen to that’s heavy, it ain’t. But I hate death metal. My problem with death metal is that there are lots of complex heavy parts. And each individual part is technically good. But the sum isn’t. It’s like a gestalt of suck where the sum sucks and the parts don’t. And the vocals suck. So, while death metal is heavy, it sucks. I do like hardcore, metalcore, and heavy metal. But I even dig The Captain and Tennille so what do I know. Anyhoo, here’s Bury Your Dead’s The Color of Money. The lead singer is now a public school teacher in Massachusetts. I note with irony that the non-singing musicians in this band also play in some death metal bands but probably realized that death metal sucks and doesn’t pay. And their drummer is a bad ass:
Next week, we’ll do kid songs.

Mark, the drummer is also a funny SOB.
Their current bass player, Bubble is bad ass – as in he’s an MMA fighter as well.
Bunch of very cool guys.

The sound is bad-ass, they’re a tight group, the drums sound great, but the vocals– sounds like the Cookie Monster, and as usual I can’t understand any of the lyrics. I guess it’s an inside thing– you have to already have read the lyric sheet to know what they’re singing (talking? I’m not sure you can call that singing– there’s no pitch or melody to it, is there? We’ll just call it “vocals”. They’re “vocalizing”) about. “Coookiieees!”
I’ve wondered about this a lot, and it applies to many, if not most, bands and modern styles. If you’re going to write words to a song, why not at least make some effort to see to it that people can understand them? I spent 20 years mixing live sound, and that was one of my goals, but if you wanted a cover to sound more like the original, you might have to bury the vocals a bit. Using LED meter bars for all the sub group outputs, and listening to our live recordings, I found there were certain relationships I would shoot for in the peaks. Kick, snare and vocals usually representing the peaks, depending on the style. Sometimes you’d include the bass. ‘Course there’s only so much the human ear can stand, and if the drums and bass are already kicking you in the chest, and the guitar is churning your guts, which is cool I admit, it’s pretty hard to get the vocals to stand out without exceeding the load limits of the venue architecture.

I have seen this band several times… But the best had to be when the guitarist got a little bit cocky and decided to flip the guitar around his body with the sling…The guitar slammed into the singers skull and he was bleeding all over the place… He finished out the set… but there was quite a but of blood…

Dude I will put Static-X against whatever you listen to. Super technical band, emotional lyrics, and great guys. They dig Ayn Rand too – it’s a start!
Ok Gwar and Dying Fetus are probably heavier, but you can’t listen to it because it’s not good. Static-X is fucking great.

Who knew nk stook for nikos kadjidakis?
Count me a fan. And there’s your proof: there’s different kinds of “heavy.”
My best friends? The Beam brothers: Jim and TomJo.

I liked it, but no one ever suspects me of being a closet metalhead.
