Every aspect of life regulated
Because they have nothing better to do:
College football fans aching for a playoff system won a small victory Wednesday when a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee passed a bill aimed at bringing down the Bowl Championship Series.
I don’t like it so there ought to be a law.

Let me pull out my handy Constitution to see which article or amendment covers college football. Oh, there is right in the pre-amble. Of course I am using the special Congressional Edition.

Actually you could consider it (reasonably) under the commerce clause, and think of it as a trust or monopoly. It’s basically not allowing college athletes, kids, to play for the biggest accomplishment unless they have a certain team name.
This of course sucks, but where it can be considered illegal is the fact that it basically is purely for the cash, tons of money are handed out by the BCS and the BCS makes even more. This is all handed out based on which conference you are in. If you are one of the select 6 you get a payout each year, if you are not you get a small fraction of that but split among the other 5 conferences, 51 or so teams split up less money that the 9 or 12 in one conference.
And if you are one of the teams outside the BCS conferences when you make a BCS team you take your 18.4 million and split it among the 51 teams, (unless there’s a second non-bcs team, they earn something like 4 million) but if you are a BCS team you split your 18.4 million among 9 or 12 teams.
Also for the control of the BCS each conference in the big 6 get a vote, and then there is one vote for the other 5 conferences.
So I’d rather have congress messing around with college football than them touch health care.

There’s a decent opinion piece about the BCS

William’s right. It’s a corrupt system, and this may be the only way to stop it. And I’m an SEC fan.

Want to cure what is wrong with college football? Pay the players.
