Kids and guns
how would you describe your success with concern to having children and guns in the same house?

I’ve told Junior that any time she ever wanted to go shooting, she just had to ask. And we’d drop whatever we were doing and go. So, there’s no need for her to handle a gun out of curiosity when I’m not around.
I’ve written about Kids and Guns quite a bit.

I’ve told my kids the same thing, and at least so far have gotten 100% good results. My NRA instructor friends mostly have a cow when I tell them not all my guns are locked up. But locked up = useless for what I have bought most of the guns for. I’d rather raise smart kids than lock up the guns :-). Unfortunately my kids have friends, and when they come over the guns that aren’t on me do get locked up. It is likely my neighbours are raising dumb kids.

Bought my daughter a Chipmunk .22 for her 6th b-day last April. She is actually quite good.

Also went down the path of instruction rather than lock up. It is no different than a swimming pool for tools in my wood shop. Trying to keep the kids away from dangerous things will fail. Making them safe around the danger just requires training and serves them for the rest of their life.

Greetings from Texas,
When I grew up we all (myself, younger brother snd sister) knew where Dad’s guns were. We knew they were loaded. We knew the fastest way we would ever meet Jesus was to be caught playing with one.
Just about every house in the towns we lived in, both Texas and Nevada were the same way. If we wanted to go shooting all we had to do was ask.
I never heard of a kid shoothing him or her self, or another kid, until I was grown and this common sense approach to firearms was abondoned.

I “have” to keep them locked up here (Perth, Western Australia) but the girls know that i’m happy to take them up the range any time they would like a shoot.
Both of my girls love to help me reload and are often disappointed if i don’t need to 🙂
We had two classmates of my 6y.o. last time we went to the range and my eldest has some friends who would like to come along one day too. I really believe an open & honest & practical approach is the way to go when it comes to guns.
