The funniest part of this story is how far behind CNN and the Washington Post has been. And it’s a local news story for the Post. They still can’t bring themselves to say that the detective pulled his gun, thirty hours later. Get this, the Post even admits they have an editorial assistant who was there.
MSM, your one stop source for reprints of government press releases.
I’m siding with the cop (and Althouse), rather than Gawker.
Throwing snowballs at passing cars is an assault, not a game – and no matter what Gawker says, they’re not “kids”, that wasn’t “draconian”, and it’s not “martial law”.
The cop looks to have not pointed his firearm at any of them – and having it out of the holster when confronted with a large group of people, throwing projectiles around and trying to provoke him?
Sounds plenty reasonable to me.
A proper snowball fight isn’t blocking the street or attacking random passers-by or their vehicles.
A proper snowball fight involves only willing participants, and doesn’t cause traffic problems (such as distracting people driving in snow near parked cars and pedestrians, in a way, oh, liable to cause panicked braking).
When you’re doing both of those, you’re not just playing harmless kiddie games anymore.
Oh horseshit! This guy went around the bend because he was treated the same as anybody else, and that is the highest insult that one can do to an Only One.
This is why cops should still have night sticks. After they took night sticks away from police forces in the 90s, you could see the shooting statistics skyrocket.
You can’t taser a whole crowd of hipsters with snowballs, but you can sure thump enough of them to get the rest to run.
I can’t disagree with your more, Sigivald. Here’s the thought exercise for you:
If you are driving along in your car, and someone throws a snowball at it, what do you think would happen if you stopped your car, jumped out, and brandished a pistol at a crowd?
Then, relocate your thought experiment to Washington, DC.

This cop pulled a gun in a SNOWBALL FIGHT!
He very obviously had no reason to fear being killed or seriously injured. The gun should have stayed in the holster.
If you or I or Uncle did this we’d be arrested and charged with brandishing a firearm. He should be suspended at the very least.

I would like to know more of how the thing started too because cops are not allowed to look the other way if there is a breach of the public peace.
