Selling a lawful product causes outrage

Woot points to a good deal on a gun. My first thought was who would want one of those? But the item became the most popular item on the site. PSH ensues in comments. And the Washington Post does a surprisingly non-hysterical bit about it.

Zoo gets white RINO? Oh, no, they actually mean a rhinoceros. I was confused.

More Exobrains

While they’re good at some games, they suck at others.

Like you and me, only better

I thought texting while driving was illegal? Oh, just for you. That looks safe.

Google Goggles. Snap a picture of an object and it will search the web based on the pic. It has, thus far, been surprisingly accurate. I googled up two books based on a pic of the cover. Then, I snapped a photo of my EeePC. And Google went to Google’s home page because that was the webpage that was up on the screen. Impressive.

Update: A reader asked, so I snapped a photo of the Kel-Tec with LaserGrips. No matches found.

Squeaky on carry permit databases:

I got a gun because of an ex who’d raped me and then began stalking me. I went through all of the appropriate steps to become licensed to carry a concealed weapon, and I’m listed in the same database section that my ex would be if he was arrested for that rape. How is that a public service?

Free Icecream: Not Free Enough and Wrong Flavor

Apparently, folks who wanted free federal healthcare for everyone are upset that, to get some kind of reform, concessions had to be made. Like not giving free federal healthcare to everyone.

Here’s an idea: Allow importation of drugs; let folks buy coverage across state lines; allow those who purchase their own insurance to get the same tax breaks as businesses that provide coverage. Can’t have that, though. Too much like the free market.

Concealed Carry = Probable Cause

A federal district judge in Atlanta has ruled that a officer who sees your gun has reasonable suspicion. Your carry permit is an affirmative defense. Court documents here.

Truth

Tam, in a chat last night on Gun Nuts Radio, said:

If your guns never malfunction, you’re not shooting them enough.

That’s a good one

Petey Hamm, of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership taking time out from threatening to shoot me, says:

If someone is not a convicted felon or hasn’t been found to be a danger to themselves due to mental illness and they believe they can handle a firearm, we support their right to purchase one.

Wow. How the mighty have fallen:

the Brady Campaign, which once pushed for a nationwide gun ban, has now lost so much ground on the national scene that they’re forced to debate (and lose to) amateurs, and issue statements in the media supporting the right to keep and bear arms!

Update: Petey opposes the Brady Campaign?

Mentioned the picture frame that held an AR yesterday. Another option is the hide a gun, which has pistol and rifle variants.

New guns in bars bill

Video here. ACK says it seems a bit odd:

the new proposal says that if a place serves liquor you can carry your gun but if it “only serves beer you can’t.”

Odd. But I’m guessing that’s because of beer and liquor licensing laws in Tennessee being unusual.

First, they came for the sex offenders

17 year-old kid becomes a registered sex offender because he had sex with his 15 year-old girlfriend. A few years later, he’s arrested for being within some arbitrary distance of a school. He was playing basketball in his driveway.

I’ve mentioned before that I have, in the past, done some work with sexual offenders. A cheery lot, no doubt. Most worthy of being put in a hole or shot. But we occasionally had the person who was there who shouldn’t have been. We had one kid who was 17. His crime was he had consensual sex with a 16 year-old girl. And the girl’s dad was none too happy that his little darlin was doing black dudes. Pity. His life was kinda ruined after that.
