Bleg: Cars
I was pondering getting a new F150. But then decided that I don’t really haul that much stuff other than me and a couple of kids. So, I figure I’ll just keep my current truck and get a car. The rules:
Something kinda sporty
Four door
new or slightly used
I refuse to spend more than $35K on a car.
Nothing from GM, Chrysler, etc. I will not support companies that took government bailout money. Pity because I really the looks of the Dodge Magnum and Challenger.
Decent gas mileage.

Yeah, in defense of the peanut gallery, no mention was made of drivetrain requirements or specifications…or really even vehicle type. Dude just needs a car that gets decent mileage. It’s a pretty wide open field. Having taken all manner of vehicles apart from bumper to bumper and having taken instruction on how to drive cars under race conditions, I’m fairly well versed on how they operate. Not to appeal to my own authority, but I’m a little nonplussed in re: why RWD/FWD/AWD is all that relevant here without some direction from our host.

Sebastian – Our host here is only affirming my point that gun nuts know nothing about cars!
I love that even after my comment two more FWD cars were recommended!

This is going to sound like a strange suggestion, but Volvo S60R? Nothing like pulling away from sportscars in a Volvo.

As far as four doors, kinda sporty, decent mileage, under 35K goes I’d go with:
Mazdaspeed 3 – The mileage ain’t great (21mpg combined) but it’s got sporty nailed down, and it’s a fairly practical car. I’ve taken one for a test drive, and I’ll be damned if I could tell it was FWD.
Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart – Again, the mileage is is not amazing (22MPG combined) but it’s plenty quick, handles well, and has four doors. It’s got the fancy paddle shifters and AWD as well. It’s cheaper to insure than a WRX for some reason (The WRX would be a fine choice by the way).

straightarrow- As far as I know, you’re correct, but that’s why my 8500rpm Honda motor has a chain instead of a belt (that and I can’t imagine real-time cam phasing with a belt, yeesh). I think belts are an accountant’s decision, whereas chains are an engineer’s.
ModlCitzn – I’ve built cars; I know plenty about them. I just can’t think of any RWD units that are both 4dr and sporty, and also are worth owning. I am in good company, I think.
Any of the VW junkies care to guess what a single halfshaft costs for a Golf? I saw a bone stock GTI shear one at the CV joint once; shit metal and shit design. I agree that turbo diesels are the way of the future, but I’m waiting for the Toyota or Honda design, myself.

M Gallo-
Yup, no one would ever want to own a new BMW M5 or a Quattroporte S. Thank you for supporting my hypothesis that gun nuts no nothing about cars.
I dare anyone to google those cars and not be willing to trade limbs for one.

you people who by foreign cars based on where they are built is like an ostrich with its head in the sand where do you think the large majority of that purchase price goes —OVERSEAS AND YEAH THEY HIRE AMERICAN WORKERS AT A DRASTICALLY LOWERED WAGES.NOT TO MENTION ALL THE AMERICAN SUPPLIERS YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PUTTING OUT OF WORK,AND AS FAR AS QUALITY THE ONLY REASON OUR CARS ARENT AS RELIABLE “ANYMORE:” IS BECAUSE AMERICAN CAR MANUFACTURES HAVE TO BUY FOREIGN PARTS TO COMPETE FOR PRICE IF PRICE IS NOT A FACTOR ARE MACHING AND ENGINEERING IS SECOND TO NONE NOT TO MENTION ALL THE TECHNOLOGY FOREIGN COMPANIES AND GOVERNMENTS STEAL FROM US N YOU ARE ALL SELL OUTS YOU FOREIGN DRIVING MORONS

yeah, maybe that’s why i didn’t have to bail out those darn foreigners. I’ll never buy a GM. Ever. Even if their cars are made of lollipops and run on water.

what i mean is, a selfish way and no regard for OUR neighbors type of thinking keeps us (shooters) seperate which led to laws that are/were unreasonable which is the battle were(shooters)in right nowwhich ties into our society as a whole …united we stand devided we fall …what caused the great depression :debt and the governments willingness to let the financial system work itself out.which caused a financial collapse so,as far as a bailout how much industries do we have left and oh by the way if all these car companies failed do you have any idea how much wose the american people would be in as a whole if we let them failat this place in time
