Layers of editorial oversight

News 4 Charleston:

The ban on assault weapons is modeled after similar laws in North Carolina and Georgia and would carry a minimum fine of $10,000 and ten years behind bars.

Except GA and NC don’t have one of those.

  1. Shootin' Buddy Says:

Many people does not understand the relation between federal and state law. Many believe that federal law and state law are the same thing.

The journalist will call ATF wanting an agent to do the homework for them. Inquiring about “asault rifles” the agent will parrot the NFA back to them, not explaining that the NFA is federal, not state law.

This is what happened here and since no one in the media knows any better it gets reported as “fact.”

    The blind leading the blind.

  2. Heartless Libertarian Says:

They say “GA and NC” because they know that, being in SC, if they suggested their state adopt anything “modelled after similar laws in CA, NY, and MA” their (few remaining) readers would demand that they be fired post haste.

  3. Xrlq Says:

Apparently the second layer of editorial oversight has kicked in since this post went up. The story now reads, presumably accurately:

According to [gun-grabbing fucknozzle Wendell] Gilliard, the ban on assault weapons is modeled after similar laws in North Carolina and Georgia and would carry a minimum fine of $10,000 and ten years behind bars.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
