People in the Northeast Megalopolis are skewed so far to the left that what is a conservative to them (Giuliani, Romney, Bloomberg) would be viewed as a pinko com-symp red spy anywhere west of the Appalachians or south of the Potomac.
A non-trivial number of firearms enthusiasts think Theodore Roosevelt was a conservative. By mote or by beam, we all tend to develop certain blind spots.
Rudy is conservative in the same way that my Mom was a moderate until she retired and moved to the country. Once she was finally nowhere near Washington D.C., I was able to get her to understand that she was moderate in the same way that so many women on personal ads that weigh 250# or more think they’re “average size” because their friends are the same size.
To be fair to Ruddy, he simply left out the “…since 9/11” bit, or “since the war began” etc., as anyone would have understood. OK? It’s been said a lot, we all know what it means, and it’s true for what it’s worth, which to some people is quite a lot.
That being said, you could stick an “R” after Karl Marx’s name, as in, “Karl Marx (R)” and some people would call him a “conservative”, then set out to attack his kids’ lifestyles and file frivolous law suits against him on that basis.
“A non-trivial number of firearms enthusiasts think Theodore Roosevelt was a conservative.”
He was photographed holding guns, and he was a hunter and outdoorsman. But then so too no doubt were several members of the SS. I hear even some hardened criminals nowadays are gun guys. Doesn’t make them conservative.
Just proves what we’ve known all along– there have been so few people championing conservatism that a lot of Americans don’t understand the meaning of the word.

I’ll admit to occasionally using “the Good Roosevelt” by spinal reflex when what I meant to say was “the Less-Bad Roosevelt”.
