A self defense plan
Have one. It can include running, which is probably your best bet if possible. Running, however, is complicated by other factors such as if you have kids.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.

I have to say it is my personal preference, but I never run. I have a substantial amount of training and experience, when I get put under the gun I get so angry that I usually(varying with situation) ATTACK! In these types of situation where My life is put in danger by some punk thug wannabe, I feel obligated to STOMP HIS GUTS OUT! I believe in inflicting MAXIMUM VIOLANCE OF ACTION ASAP against the target in question and if he has a decent weapon, I am probly going to keep it, thank you have a nice day……BUYMOREAMMO!

aaaaaaannnnddddddd you’d probably end up in jail in a lot of states.
Not every state has castle doctrine, which means that there’s a legal duty to retreat a lot of the time.
But to what Uncle said – yes, the “run away” plan is oft complicated by things like children, footwear, and outside factors. That’s why it’s important to seperate strategy (what you want to do in a fight) from tactics (what you do to win the fight).

“Running, however, is complicated by other factors such as if you have kids.”
That depends on how much you like your kids.

Run? I couldn’t run faster that the other 44 kids in my high school class and non of them where track stars.
Course I won’t fight unless there are no other options. Too old for that any more.
No, best option is shoot till empty and plant a cheap folder on the corpse.
Avoidance, now that is one I can get behind.

Running from somebody who is faster than you is essentially just turning your back on a known threat. I Massachusetts we have a duty to retreat. I’ll simply retreat into my coat for my .45, then retreat into my wallet for my Lawyer’s card, and my pocket for my cellphone.
Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Spook, I am turned like you. However, I have been shot, ….twice. Did come out on top both times, but each time I would rather have been armed than inflicted with anger to the point of stupidity. However, it was not the case, and I fear I haven’t changed much. Except for being too old and beat up by a hard life to be as effective as I once was. For the record, I never got shot after making contact. Both times I was shot first from beyond arm’s reach. I am extremely happy that neither of them were any damn good with a gun.

Had I known it was about to happen, I would like to think I would have practiced avoidance somehow. I do think it the better tactic. Until of course I get stupid because I’m pissed. Then I don’t think. Only luck keeps you alive when you quit thinking. I am one lucky sonofabitch.

“…is complicated by other factors…”
Heh, like being laughed at by turtles when try to lumber into a trot.
I’ll have to stick with either avoidance or Caleb’s “Full cup of coffee and a will to live” strategy.
