Guns in Restaurants Hysteria

It’s going to hurt tourism business. I mean, you remember all those people who were killed during the over three months guns could be carried there, don’t you? We have no stats or numbers to prove it but we’re going to say it.

And in Memphis? Because when I think of safe cities in TN, I think of Memphis.

Political Reality

Frank Cagle brings the truth:

Legislators are often scorned for being afraid of the National Rifle Association and passing gun bills, quaking in fear of the special interest group. Most Tennessee legislators are not afraid of the NRA, they are the NRA.

And hippies cry. He also notes how last year being the supposed Year of the Gun has lead to press sensationalizing the business of the legislature. For years, former house speaker Jimmy Naifeh kept these gun bills that were supported by most in the legislature from ever coming to a vote. He used parliamentary tricks to kill all pro-gun bills. He even cheated when he had to.

Via Bitter, who notes:

There is no excuse for poor work on the matter, especially when the coverage of gun-related bills is often terrible to begin with.

Terrorist

The system works: Eight year old boy on FBI terror watchlist. And if some politicians had their way, he’d be unable to buy a gun when he became an adult.

Google Voice

A bit back, Ry sent me an invite to Google Voice. I’ve been playing with it and it’s pretty slick. Some features:

You can send SMS texts from a browser

you can use it to avoid minute overages on your phone (not an issue for me)

it gives you what Verizon calls visual voicemail for free

it transcribes voice messages to text and can send them to you via email or text or in the voice app for your phone

You can use your PC to dial a number and your phone will ring, you answer and it call whoever you’re calling.

Discounted international rates (though I don’t use that).

Keeps voicemail forever.

You can screen calls

Calls you don’t want can automatically go to voice mail.

Check voice mail from any where.

And you can port it to any phone (mine is set up for the Droid, the office and home).

Some cons:

Have to use a google issued phone number. It’d be nice if I could just port my cell number to it because if I make a call from my PC, caller ID displays my google number and people don’t know who it is.

A bit flaky on the whole phone porting business. My wife can’t leave me a message from home because, since that number is ported, it goes to voice mail admin.

Overall, I dig it. But would like to just use my existing cell number.

Oh and you can browse available numbers when you sign up. I had some fun with mine.

Probably wouldn’t have this problem if no-knock raids were not SOP

OK law makes it illegal to fortify home if you have drugs:

bill that makes it unlawful for “any person to willfully fortify an access point into any dwelling, structure, building or other place where a felony offense prohibited by the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Act is being committed, or attempted, and the fortification is for the purpose of preventing or delaying entry or access by a law enforcement officer, or to harm or injure a law enforcement officer in the performance of official duties.

Quote of the Day

Robert in comments on why guns are necessary:

They are necessarry. They keep the big from terrorizing the little. The young from assaulting the old. The many have to respect the few and the infirm may defend themselves from the healthy.

End of an Era

And I remember 8 tracks.

This past weekend, we did some cleaning. And I took all of our CDs and put them in storage. We’d long ago ripped them to MP3 and use our computer or MP3 players to play music through our stereo speakers and outdoor wireless speakers. MP3 player works in the car. In short, no need for CDs anymore. I had actually taken the CD player out of the house months ago to make room on the entertainment center for the Wii stuff.

Also, kinda got me to thinking about music and intellectual property laws. If I own a CD, I can rip it. What if I, say, sell a physical CD? Or lose it? Do I still have legal ownership of the media?

Wii and Netflix

Bitter tells us that you can use Netflix on the Wii to stream movies on your TeeVee. That is cool. We have netflix and love it. We get unlimited DVDs/BluRay each month and have the unlimited web download. We’ve been using an HDMI cable from a laptop to stream to our TeeVee.

The Conservative Case for Gay Marriage

From Ted Olson:

Many of my fellow conservatives have an almost knee-jerk hostility toward gay marriage. This does not make sense, because same-sex unions promote the values conservatives prize. Marriage is one of the basic building blocks of our neighborhoods and our nation. At its best, it is a stable bond between two individuals who work to create a loving household and a social and economic partnership. We encourage couples to marry because the commitments they make to one another provide benefits not only to themselves but also to their families and communities. Marriage requires thinking beyond one’s own needs. It transforms two individuals into a union based on shared aspirations, and in doing so establishes a formal investment in the well-being of society. The fact that individuals who happen to be gay want to share in this vital social institution is evidence that conservative ideals enjoy widespread acceptance. Conservatives should celebrate this, rather than lament it.

Bleg: Video Cameras

Looking for a small, lightweight video camera that can dump videos on the netbook pretty quick. Decent battery life. And charges fast. There’s a FlipUltra that gets decent reviews at Amazon. Anyone use one or have another suggestion?

NFRTR Troubles

It’s a topic I’ve addressed a few times. But David notes three suppressors not in the database but there were approved forms and tax stamps.

And remember institutionalized perjury is the norm for ATF with respect to the database.:

when we testify in court, we testify that the database is 100 percent accurate. That’s what we testify to, and we will always testify to that. As you probably well know, that may not be 100 percent true . . . When I first came in a year ago, our error rate was between 49 and 50 percent, so you can imagine what the accuracy of the NFRTR could be, if your error rate’s 49 to 50 percent

Despite:

when I first came in a year ago, our error rate was between 49 and 50 percent, so you can imagine what the accuracy of the NFRTR could be, if your error rate’s 49 to 50 percent. The error rate now is down to below 8 percent, and that’s total. That’s common errors and critical errors.

A firearms freedom act in VA?

While I admire the sentiment, I think these kinds of laws are 1) generally pointless and 2) can’t win a lawsuit.

The Lane Train Leaving the Station

Vols fans hated Phil Fulmer. But they hate everyone who’s not Phil Fulmer too. They hate their quarterback but they hate other quarterbacks more. They hate their team for sucking. But they hate other teams more. They hated Lane Kiffin for being their coach. And now they hate him for leaving Tennessee.

Vols fans are an odd lot. They love UT football but hate everything about it.

Being Evil

Everyone’s all excited at Google telling China where it can go:

China attacked a company and now that company is taking retaliatory action. A nation attacking a company is nothing really new, but in this case the company (Google) has the capacity to do something about it. Depending on how this plays out Google could be doing something that a) no other company has had the balls to do and b) something the US Gov could only dream about doing.

I’m still a bit concerned that google was willing to censor all kinds of info as long as the Chinese government let them operate there.

We’re the only ones respecting your right to arms enough

Sheriff on the gun laws:

Maurice Clemmons, who gunned down four Lakewood police officers Nov. 29, was an evil man and no changes in gun laws are going to prevent murders like he committed.

That is a conclusion that Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum said he came to while serving on a panel of law enforcement officers looking into the shootings.

And:

“Our fear was that if a legislator has a knee-jerk reaction to this whole incident, he might come up with something that we would not be able to work with as a community,” Harum said.

Good to see the police on our side.
