There’s an app for that

Droid catches thieves:

Two young men from the Portland area, keen to get on the smartphone bandwagon without paying, broke in and stole a pair of Motorola Android handsets (along with other electronics) from a nearby household. What they didn’t foresee, however, was that one of the phones would have the free Lookout app, which automatically backs up all photos taken with the handset to a user-accessible server every night. So, in the midst of testing out their ill-gotten loot, the criminals provided the phone’s legitimate owner with enough visual clues for the police to swoop in and apprehend one of them.

Unpossible

An accounting

78 missing guns:

The ATF released on Monday a list of 78 firearms unaccounted for by the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department following a Dec. 21 burglary at the office.

Not all of the guns are believed to be stolen, said Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives Public Information Officer George Huffman.

“We believe that the actual amount of firearms that are stolen or missing is far less than 78,” Huffman said. “We believe that a large number of firearms have been released, we just can’t find the documents supporting their release.”

There are no stupid question

Ok, there are: Are guns necessary?

Well, let’s see the police go to work without them or the military. And you could probably go hunting with a stick and a rock. Or use a whole big bunch of wishful thinking to fend off a home invasion. But I don’t advise it.

Firearm law reform and law enforcement safety act get NRA support:

Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) announced today that the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) has announced its support for his bill, H.R. 3752, to modernize federal firearms laws to increase public safety and ensure proper protection for law enforcement officers. The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) Improvements Act of 2009 would improve current law to permit qualified retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed firearms.

I think the law enforcement officers safety act of 2007 covers the latter.

Can you grab the slide of a semi-auto to prevent it from firing?

Well, after some pain, it seems you can. Do not try that at home. Also, when I shoot my suppressed Walther and want it extra quiet, I place my thumb on the slide to keep it from cycling. And it does not break my thumb. I would not advise trying that with a higher caliber weapon.

the first thing a man will sacrifice to get what he wants is his principles

Senator Doug Henry: I think the whole scheme is patently unconstitutional, but it’s too much money in it not to go with it

From the Tennessee Constitution: Each member of the Senate and House of Representatives, shall before they proceed to business take an oath or affirmation to support the Constitution of this State, and of the United States and also the following oath: I ………. do solemnly swear (or affirm) that as a member of this General Assembly, I will, in all appointments, vote without favor, affection, partiality, or prejudice; and that I will not propose or assent to any bill, vote or resolution, which shall appear to me injurious to the people, or consent to any act or thing, whatever, that shall have a tendency to lessen or abridge their rights and privileges, as declared by the Constitution of this State.

NRA’s Motion for Divided Time

I pretty much agree with Sebastian’s sentiment. While I understand what their concerns are, I think this is a bad way to address them. It gives the appearance of attempting to undermine the case when the NRA should be working to help with the case. I know their goal is not to undermine the case but that’s just how this looks.

I am glad that Chris Cox was willing to discuss the issue with a gun blogger. You gotta water the grassroots sometimes.

We need good villains

I’ve said before that the movie Pocahontas err Fern Gully err Dances with Wolves err Avatar was terribly average. It was really well done visually but totally predictable. It’s apparently also racist. Remember, Hollywood used to make movies where the bad guys were able to be identified by race. And the bad guys were hated. You know, Indians were bad guys in cowboy flicks. So were olive-skinned guys in movies about terrorists, black guys in movies about street crime, Russians in the cold war, Germans in WW2 flicks, etc. But this only worked when you needed a group of bad guys and not just one. And then the PC kicked in. Then Hollywood had to start going off planet to get bad guys with films like Independence Day and others. Avatar makes the human race the bad guys. Guess that’s racist. No more group bad guys, I guess.

Meanwhile, a group of idiots is getting suicidal because they want to live in the movie Avatar. Ok, then.

The Droid Update You’re Looking For

Supposedly, Android 2.1 (i.e., the OS on the Nexus One) is set to update Droid phones on January 22. There’s a cracked version out there but rumors are that it’s quite flaky. I wonder what 2.1 has in store? From screen shots, it looks pretty snazzy.

I like the idea

The new Detonics Combat Master has an interesting sight set up. The front sight is in a groove on the barrel. And theres a slot in the slide. Like so:

With rifles, people tend to tell you to mount your optics on the barrel if possible for better accuracy. Not sure how much effect it would have on pistol accuracy but it may have some. I spotted the new Detonics in Shooting Illustrated and here’s their blog report with more pics of the Detonics.

Kirk went and got himself a Deagle. I remember when he came to town to visit and one of those ejected a round right into his forehead. It left a bloody mark. There are supposedly pics of that somewhere.
