Ugly guns are still guns

Ben West, Jr. (D-Nashville) on politically incorrect autoloading handguns:

Recent news reports about an individual carrying a legal but uncommon-looking handgun into Radnor Lake State Park raises questions about whether Tennessee’s handgun permit laws need to restrict handgun permit holders from carrying certain handguns based on their appearance.

I would oppose such legislation and think most of other legislators who support the Constitution would do likewise.

Good for Mr. West. Though, for the record, think the guy at Radnor Lake was an idiot. Wearing BDUs and carrying an AK pistol with the tip painted orange to look like a toy is retarded.

I’d have an AK too:

SI Defense AR-15 Lowers

I mentioned before that SI Defense was selling lowers for $50, a helluva deal. They quickly ran out of stock and went on a 6-8 week back order. News of good deals spreads quickly. But you’re probably wondering about quality. Reader Bugs emailed me:

First, thanks for alerting us to their sale. I ordered two. They got to my FFL holder the 6th. He doesn’t check his email often, so it took him about a week to send them a copy of his FFL.

Because of the delay of the FFL, they contacted me. I responded to their email, and got a response back within minutes.

When I placed the order, in the special comments section, I asked them to ship one unfinished if possible. I have the black one, and a bare aluminum one with a much higher serial number. I think it’s going to be my special project. When I look at it, I hear words like “Multicam”, “gas piston”, and “Grendel”.

Their email, response to my email, and shipping the bare lower impressed me. Their customer service seems impressive.

As far as quality goes, I have examined both, and I’m nothing but pleased.

Again, thanks.

That mimics my experience too. They contacted me about getting a copy of the FFL and their customer service was excellent. Mine arrived at my FFL on Friday and I picked them up Saturday. They look like this:

Initial inspection shows their excellent quality. The finish is nice and clean. I have a lower parts kit on the way and will be able to evaluate fit and function later. For two lowers that were about $160 to get in the door (factoring in FFL fees, TICS, shipping, etc.), I was impressed. I usually spend that on one.

SI Defense appears to make a good product. But they’re currently out of stock. Will do an update when I get my parts kit in.

Carry in NYC

Make a federal case out of it:

Undercover cop Richard Cowan spent three years risking his life posing as the manager of a carting company to take down Gambino and Genovese crime family gangsters.
The dangerous assignment led to 73 convictions and brought threats from wiseguys, forcing Cowan and his family to relocate from their Staten Island home.

But despite his heroism and fear of mob retribution, the NYPD won’t let Cowan carry a gun.

The 25-year veteran retired in 2008 on a medical disability after he suffered a head injury in a 2006 car accident on the job.

The department denied him a “good guy” letter — which states that a retiring cop is fit to carry a gun — because he was taking Amitriptyline, a medication that can cause suicidal thoughts.

This guy seems to meet the criteria outlined in the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act

Haslam goes hunting

Tennessee gubernatorial candidate Bill Haslam bought the wrong license thus violating state law:

As it turns out, he did not buy the most appropriate license of all under state law – the basic Tennessee hunting and fishing license that costs $27 – though he did purchase other permits that he did not need, according to Haslam’s account and TWRA records reviewed by the agency’s assistant commissioner, Nat Johnson.

After being contacted by a reporter, Haslam said he went back online to the TWRA website late Thursday and purchased the $27 basic license.

Given the apparent situation, Johnson said that – in accordance with normal TWRA procedure – the agency would “absolutely not” make any attempt to penalize Haslam with a fine.

Honest mistake, really. When I went dove hunting, I just went to the guy at the counter and said I was hunting dove and he printed off the two items I needed. Because there was no way I would have known which of the eleventy billion pieces of paper I needed. I hope Haslam takes away from this that gun owners and hunters in this state are unduly burdened with bureaucracy. And, if elected, me might do something about that.

Guns in restaurants: The Remix

A look at TN gubernatorial candidates on guns:

All seven major candidates express support for Second Amendment rights but differ sharply on guns in bars and other issues.

Three Republicans – Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam, Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville and U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga – said they support renewing the guns-in-bars law.

The Democrats – Senate Democratic Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis, former House Democratic Leader Kim McMillan of Clarksville and Jackson businessman Mike McWherter – plus Republican Shelby County District Attorney General Bill Gibbons, expressed opposition to guns in places serving alcohol.

A threat

Some shitty musician in an appropriately named band threatens to punch a gun blogger in the face because gun nuts are so violent. Or something. He also happens to have been a democrat candidate for office. But, like his music, it wasn’t a success. His wife is a lawyer and you would think she might tell him she’s tired of supporting him and he should put the bong down and get a real job. Or that playing mediocre music won’t put any progeny through school. And a lawyer might also tell him that threats of violence in a public arena are probably a bad idea. And that google is forever, you know, should he decide to actually get a real job, which is unlikely. Obligatory making fun ensues. He retorts:

In several of my comments, I made derogatory remarks directed at the trolls. I said some nasty stuff. Some colorful language was used. I stand by that language. I also stand by my offer to face them one on one and punch these idiots in their faces. That’s how I roll.

Why are anti-gun activists and musicians so violent? Clearly, we should ban mediocre music. And bongs.

If he threatened me, I’d go to a local judge and get a restraining order taken out against him. That’s how I roll. Because I don’t have something to prove. To my wife.

Cover Songs: FNM

I’ve been remiss in my music posts so I’ll post a couple of cover songs. First, is Faith No More. They always seem to get one good cover on most of their albums. Mike Patton is, truly, one of the greatest vocalists of all time. He can do any style of music, from thrash to death metal. Opera to folk. Goofy to rock. Rap to pop. He can do the Bee Gees:

He can do Lionel Richie:

And, in his natural environment of rock, he rocks:

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
