I don’t see why Sig, who makes a VERY serviceable 556 felt the need to also make a Piston AR.
They’ll probably make money from it tho. Won’t make me get it any more.

Weer’d: I have pondered this question myself. My best answer comes somewhere in this SIG booth video from SHOT show:

The Sig rep makes it clear that they’re pretty much msking it for law enforcement agencies. Sig obviously has a great reputation with LE from their pistol lineup, and many LE’s won’t look at a patrol rifle unless it’s an AR. I guess this is for training and commonality of parts purposes, but it seems like a pretty dumb policy to me. In any case, I guess Sig doesn’t want to leave that money sitting on the table. But my take from the video is that they’re not terribly gung-ho about selling the AR to civilians.
What blows my mind is that their new piston AR seems to be based on a completely different design than the 55x series. They really need to make a 556 upper that fits on an AR lower. Yes, it would probably be ungainly, but I think they could make it fit. They might have to offer a redesigned hammer, but other than that, I think it would work. At $999 I think they would sell like hotcakes.
