As it should be, the only upsides I know to having a shall issue situation is 1)when the police pull you over etc, they already know, which is bad but at the same time they know you have no criminal record, that you have passed a series of background checks and that they are likly safer in your presence than in the presence of others who may be less desirable, and 2) The funds received help to support your state, that may or may not be a good thing depending on what state you live in. I prefer this way, aka the Vermont premise, in VT they pay no attention to the gun behind the curtain. That is to say, if you get busted for say a gas drive off, they dont freak about the fact that you have a gun(unless the incident was force related) they focus on the criminal act, the gas drive off. The only time the gun becomes an issue is if it was an instrument of the crime. This is how it should be. I mean, in the old west and other places at the time, even when you went to prison they returned your guns to you when your dept to society was paid. Today, if you get convicted of something, there is no finality to it, you pay for the rest of your life.

WVCDL is trying for this in West Virginia as well. I wonder if this is the beginning of a trend. I sure hope so.

Spook45: For now, I prefer Alaska-style law to Vermont’s, because it is nice to get reciprocity with states who aren’t quite there yet. You shouldn’t need a permit, but you should be able to get one if you want. Aside from the reciprocity issue, as you said having the permit speaks volumes about who you are to an investigating officer. If Alaska-style concealed carry law takes off, then the reciprocity issue to become moot.

Good development. Wyoming seems like a state where permitless VT/AK style concealed carry has a chance of passing.

And it would be useful, for right now, although WY is “Shall Issue”, the actual statutory language in the state has a definite tinge of “May Issue”, as there’s a broadly worded exception for people that the police have reason to think are dangerous.

If VT carry spreads enough, “Vat is diss, reciprocity?”

  6. Hartley Says:

AZ is headed the same way, tho it is not at all certain for passage..

  7. Other Steve Says:

Why does no one else know this?

Montana House Bill 238 passed in 2009. Makes carrying a concealed weapon not a crime unless you are commiting another crime.

  8. Chas Says:

What are permits good for? Good people don’t need them and bad people don’t get them. How well does that work?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
