A trend
Buying a whole new rifle because ammo is expensive:
It costs more to buy ammo than it does to buy a new gun.
I have about 5k rounds of 5.56.
I have about 25k rounds of 22lr
I like shooting my Sig 556.
I go to the gun show.
I see Wolf .223(which my Sig eats like candy) for $220/1000
I see PMC 5.56(which my Sig also eats like candy) for $320/1000
I see the Sig 522 rifle, a copy of my Sig 556 in 22lr for $430So lets see.
2000 rounds of Wolf.
OR
1300 rounds of PMC
OR
A copy of my rifle that shoots ammo for which I already have thousands and thousand of rounds.

Oh to have bought stock in Ciener, Spike’s, or Black Dog two years ago…
That said, this is a good thing. At least from what I’ve seen, ammo prices haven’t gone up all that much in the absence of acute scarcity. I can still get stuff at Wal-Mart and Bass Pro for about what I paid not long ago. There are, though, far more (and more affordable) .22lr conversions out there than there were before, with the AR conversion kit, the AK-22, and Chiappa 1911 standing out in my mind.

Hence the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 sitting next to my midlength AR. Fantastic little gun, and with the discount S&W gave me for spending time in Afghanistan, a fantastic value.
I do want one of the Sigs too, they look cool.

You could do that. I bought two M&P15R’s and lots of commie surplus 5.45 at $265 per 2160 delivered instead.

As if there is ever a need to find a reason to buy a new gun.
