Big Teacher
A school in PA sent laptops home with students. Trouble is, they were set up with webcams that the administrators could activate to spy on people. Aside from the privacy concerns, the other troubling thing about this is that no one will go to jail. And someone should if you want to prevent this kind of stupidity from ever happening again.

There are no words in the English language that can describe how furious I am at this.

This may lead to a renaming of the state to Parentvania when the lawsuits are all settled.

On the Volokh site, they’re having trouble even seeing this as illegal. What law does it break?
If you put the school administration on the same child-molester list you or I would get for this, they’d have to stay 1000 feet from the school. Then the test scores would improve, and then what?
How many lawyers does it take to guarantee freedom?
Just one, if he gets to tell you what freedom is.

I say prosecute under stalking laws. Using a computer to follow a child around is stalking. Also what kind of person stalks children? The need to be castrated kind.

There are a number of crimes committed here. This isn’t just a lawsuit matter. There should be criminal charges pending against each and everyone who had any knowledge of this capability and didn’t move to stop it.
For those having trouble seeing a crime in this, I have a suggestion you can try. Place a spy camera in your neighbor’s bedroom or the bedroom of their child.
Let me know when you are informed you committed no crime.

On emother they interveiwed on TV related a phone call she got from her daughter when teh news broke:
“Mom, I leave that computer open and ON in my BEDROOM!!!”
The school system thought it would be a neat idea to bug students and illegally surveil EVERY location they had that computer open within. Likewise, if they activated teh camera in even ONE student’s bedroom while they were changing, it’s child pornography. With teh internet working the way it does, it is likely interstate pornography.
