Sign of the Times
Ran some errands yesterday and drove by the Knoxville Hummer dealer. Big signs say 50% off. Apparently, you should get them while you can:
General Motors’ sale of its Hummer line to a Chinese company is off. So unless GM can pull off a miracle, it looks like the end of the road for the giant gas-guzzlers.

Giant Gas Guzzlers?
The H2 is a Silverado and the H3 is a Blazer. Do they even make the actual HMMWV anymore? I thought Chrysler made those back in the day.

Mike said it – they’re just funny-lookin’ trucks.

they stopped making the HMMWV a while ago.
When I was in high school, I wanted to buy a surplus HMMWV as my first car. You could get them for $4-6000. Then AM General started selling “Civilian Hummers” for between $80,000 and $120,000 depending on options. Instantly the surplus market went to about $30,000 average price.
I’m still sad about that.

I’m glad that the sale to a chicom company fell through. Bastards.

Damn things are ersatz pale imitations of the real HMMWV.
They took the finest combat vehicle in the past 40 years and castrated it.

I attended a Hummer Jamboree(?) put on by a dealer, about 2004. Held at an off-road riding park. Dealer brought both the H1 and H2 demonstrators, plus nearly 100 privately owned Hummers. On a very tough obstacle course, the H2 demonstrated an offroad capability that was nearly as good as the H1. Of course, there will be some extreme situations that the H1 will handle better, but it was demonstrated that it would take a modified 4×4 of some sort to equal the H2. I was very impressed.
PawPaw, the HMMWV was not intended to be a COMBAT vehicle, simply a better replacement for the Jeep, which was also not a combat vehicle. Trying to use it as a fighting vehicle is when it falls on its face.
