Holster Site on the Radio

The Holster Site will be on Gun Nuts Radio tonight. Cool. Check out his holster work. Via Tam.

Ad Fail

There’s some buzz about the ad below from Audi:

Now, some folks are rather upset about that ad for fear of a police state or because it displays environmentalists as fascists and a whole other host of reasons that I’m not going to talk about. I’m going to talk about why the ad ensures I will not buy that car. The ad shows people violating what I presume are green laws and those people being arrested, harassed, and having the police state come down on them. The compliant people suffer no such fate. That is, the sheep are left alone. The ad says that, by virtue of buying this car, you will be a compliant citizen. In essence, you’ll be a better sheep. Fuck that.

The commercial should have ended with a guy in a big ass Ford Earthfuckertm that gets 5 miles per gallon with seats made from baby seals blowing past the roadblock billowing smoke. And, for effect, the driver flips them off. I’d buy that car. Not this little compliant pansy car. You appeal to Americans in an ad by showing rebellion and general orneriness. Not passiveness, compliance, or sheepishness.

Quote of the Day

On The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership:

The Brady Bunch are starting to see the writing on the wall and they have grown desperate. The evidence over the last 10 years have proven their every argument wrong. Gun control hasn’t worked. Gun rights have. States that have the least restrictions tend to also have the least amount of crime. England banned handguns in 1997. In 4 years, their gun crime doubled and their overall violent crime went up 118%. The prophesy, of murder in the streets, given when conceal carry started to be debated in the first states to take it up… never happened.

And more half-truths over the Starbuck’s issue. If you can’t win that fight with the latte sipping crowd, it just makes you look silly to cry over it.

More on bigotry

Joe notes the origin of the gun control and bigotry meme. And, of course, Clayton Cramer’s Racist Roots of Gun Control is a good read.

Also timely is David Kopel’s post on How the right to arms saved the non-violent civil rights protesters:

I was beaten and arrested many times and hospitalized twice. This happened to many, many people in the movement. No one knows what kind of massive racist retaliation would have been directed against grassroots black people had the black community not had a healthy measure of firearms within it.

And, also related, Gun Control as a Cultural Issue.

So the left and the press (but I repeat myself) went bonkers because Palin had written some notes on her hand during a speech and those notes consisted of topics of discussion. Seems they didn’t notice the guy they’re always defending actually reads his speeches from a teleprompter. Anyway, Palin had a bit of fun with the non-controversy: Heh.

State of emergency: ban gun sales, carry

WXII:

Authorities lifted a curfew and alcohol restrictions in King on Sunday, but said a state of emergency declaration remained in effect until Monday.

Authorities said the state of emergency declaration would continue until Monday 9 a.m., barring any unforeseen circumstances or severe changes.
Effective Sunday afternoon, alcohol restrictions and a curfew were lifted. All other remaining restrictions would continue until Monday, said Paula May, King police chief.

Other restrictions include a ban on the sale or purchase of any type of firearm, ammunition, explosive or any possession of such items off a person’s own premises.

ETA: Good question from comments: Does NC have a Katrina anti-confiscation law?

Update: Looks like NC law is just the opposite:

5. Areas of Emergency and Riot
It is also a misdemeanor under North Carolina law for a person to transport or possess, off his or her own premises, a dangerous weapon in an area during a declared state of emergency, or in the vicinity of a riot. N.C. Gen. Stat. § 14-288.7 A concealed handgun permit does not allow a permittee to carry a weapon in these areas. N.C. Gen.

Stat. § 14-415.11(c)

We’re so used to creating astroturf, we expect it from our opponents

Regarding the post below about bigotry and The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership, it occurred to me that one of the problems for them is that they don’t know who they’re having an argument with. Says their blogger who may or may not be Petey, Paul, Dennis or some unpaid intern:

In fact, the notion of “bigotry” is perhaps the pillar upon which the National Rifle Association itself has built its whole bogus empire.  That is: “Aren’t you mad at those coastal elites who look down their noses at you and your ‘way of life’?  You should be mad as hell.  GET MAD AS HELL AT THOSE ELITES!  Donate to us today.”

That’s basically the NRA’s pitch in a nutshell.

You’ll notice their first link goes to Ammoland, who appear to have taken some liberties with this article that appears at NRA-ILA’s page that I linked up earlier.

Headline at NRA page: Maybe Brady Campaign Should Switch To Decaf

Headline and sub-head at Ammoland: Maybe the Social Bigots of the Brady Campaign Should Switch To Decaf
Social bigotry against gun owners is just as insidious as bigotry against any other group. – AmmoLand.com

The Brady Camp then tries to say that that’s the NRA’s pitch, which it’s not, by linking to an ammoland post. The original bigot assertion was by bloggers doing grassroots activism. Not NRA. Grassroots activism (like membership) being something the Brady Camp does not have. So, of course they presume that all other grassroots activism is tied to an organization or astroturf. It’s how they do it.

The Brady Campaign thinks it’s fighting the NRA when it’s really reduced to fighting a bunch of guys in their pajamas.

Update: To be clear, I’m saying that Brady is using ammoland to tie NRA to the blogger meme.

Bigotry

That’s been a meme on gun blogs for a while. Because gun rights are civil rights and those who oppose civil rights have historically been viewed as bigots. I’ve said before that my only issue with the meme was one of marketing. I don’t think the meme is effective with your average white people.

That said, yes, anti-gun people have an odd sort of bigotry and that’s been playing out on the blogosphere. And Joe shows us quite a few examples of such bigotry. And Sebastian weighs in on the bigotry meme too.

And this is funny. The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Ownership steps up to say “Nyuh uh, we’re not bigots“. Their rebuttal is a bit silly. Because the notion of bigotry that we’re pushing is the civil rights angle and the general condescension in which an anti-gunner views anyone who is a pro-gun activist to be a red-necked, knuckle-dragging, Neanderthal. As sebastian notes:

It’s one thing to argue in favor of your position. It’s quite another to strongly imply that you’re better and more enlightened than those who oppose your position.

Realism

Is IDPA realistic? Is IPSC? I have my issues with both which I will briefly discuss:

IPSC: too much gamer for me. The man with best toys wins.

IDPA: too many silly rules about gun size, caliber, weight and wardrobe. As a matter of policy, I do not wear shoot-me first vests. And I’m sure my carry rig in general wouldn’t allow me to play in their reindeer games.

That said, both are still great. Practice is practice.
