Weirdest thing you’ll see today

Kirsten Dunst dressed like an anime heroine singing Turning Japanese. In Tokyo. It’s good and bad all at the same time.

Interesting

Headline:

Feds seize 30 ‘machine guns’ at Tacoma’s port

Except:

The guns were fashioned to shoot plastic balls but could have easily become real weapons, the feds said.

So, they’re airsoft guns? But wait:

Investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive showed that the guns had been tooled to shoot plastic balls. However, parts could be switched out quickly to allow them to fire live ammunition.

Really? So these can be converted to a real gun? I’m skeptical.

Via The Real Gun Guys.

Update: In comments:

They’re right. If you replace the lower receiver, the lower parts group, the barrel, the fire control group, and the bolt carrier group, that Airsoft rifle is now a lethal weapon.

So, it’s a gun because it has stocks and handguards? You’d still have to get full auto fire control groups, bolts, and such. By this rational, an upper receiver is a machine gun.

Kinda stabby lately

In KY, a psychiatrist attacks a patient with a sword.

In Memphis, a woman downs a 40 then runs through her kid’s school with a sword. Unpossible: The school being a sword-free zone and all.

Speaking of Colorado

Suit filed to challenge the Colorado State University gun ban.

Which flavor of crazy?

The debate continues about whether the nut that flew a plane into the IRS building is a terrorist. And if he’s a right-wing or left-wing kook. Well, by definition, I would say this attack is terrorism since it was, based on his manifesto, designed to draw attention to political action. Him being left or right is a bit different. He was anti-tax, wanted free health care, hated the church, and had many other views that were left or right. But was upset that the .gov didn’t do much to help him personally. Seems like a moderate crazy to me.

And alert the media: terrorist killer whale seen at tea party!

Colorado Shooting

A school shooting in Colorado involved a bolt action rifle. The only difference between a hunting rifle and sniper rifle is the target.

And hats off to Dr. David Benke who tackled the shooter.

It’s like they’re not even trying anymore.

Guns in parks

Apparently, the bill has an opt out provision. And Maine is looking at opting out. I can’t recall if it has such a provision but I’m certain the bill does say that carry is contingent upon following local laws.

More lost guns

ATF probes missing guns from the Cleveland PD. They should probably go have a look-see at the Department of Homeland Security.

Harsher sentences for crimes involving guns

They always say it. But they never mean it.

So, they instead usually pass one more pointless law. After all, imprisoning someone costs money. Passing one more law is cheap.

Today’s unnecessarily complex gun law question

Courtesy of subguns:

I have a 26.5mm flare pistol and was thinking about making it into an integrally suppressed single shot pistol after filing the paperwork and paying the $200. This would be done by making an insert to drop into the flare gun barrel, chambered for 38 S&W or 32acp. The insert would have bleed off holes into the barrel area which would be baffled to cool the gasses and reduce the sound. My question is which part would I serialize on the form 1 application, the insert or the flare gun barrel?

Let’s see. Potential Any Other Weapon because it’s smooth bore? Potential destructive device because the bore is greater than 1/2 inch. Also, obviously, the insert may have to be the suppressor. Interestingly, non suppressed flare guns converted to fire rounds have been deemed AOWs by ATF. Though no explanation to why.

More Vests

Blogs and legacy media

Christian Grantham:

The effort by mostly print and broadcast to figure out how best to harness the power of local blogs seems to languish in experiment mode as legacy media resources shift to triage a dying industrial-aged distribution model for news and information. Blogs have long urged legacy media for the better part of the past decade to pay attention to the dramatic shift in the way people prefer receiving news and information. The message seems to have arrived on the desks at the top ten years too late.

He also asks:

What should a serious effort involving local bloggers in a community website look like, and what would you tolerate to make it viable? What value do you want to see from an “NIT” in return?

Color me skeptical. Legacy media doesn’t react quickly, well, or helpfully when bloggers offer criticism. So, why should a blogger think their contribution of material would be substantially different?

I think I see the problem

Article: Current laws not stopping illegal gun epidemic

Later in the piece:

When police do arrest people with illegal guns in their possession, rarely is the punishment serious.

Vest Test

I managed to inherit a bullet resistant vest. I was going to spend a weekend shooting it to see what it took to make a hole in it. But then I read this comment that made me reconsider:

They’re nice to have when you’re RO’ing (or even just shooting at) a range that’s open to the public and Mr. “Muzzle safety, what Muzzle safety!” walks in.

Lasermax internal laser for the Glock 30

Carteach has a review. I wonder how accurate it is? Glocks with laser sights can be problematic. On one end of the spectrum, the Lasermax cannot be adjusted. It is what it is out of the box and you can’t adjust point of aim. And that can be a problem. Conversely, some folks have told me that the Crimson Trace laser grips for Glocks are installed via a pin and therefore can pivot, thus affecting accuracy. Anyone else have thoughts?

Jay also reviewed the laser here.

Update: And, as Tam reminds me, the other issue with LaserMax type lasers is they require one more button to activate. That is one definite benefit of the Crimson Trace: they just turn on when you grip the gun.

Big Government

Glenn Greenwald on the GOP and Tea:

There’s a major political fraud underway: the GOP is once again donning their libertarian, limited-government masks in order to re-invent itself and, more important, to co-opt the energy and passion of the Ron-Paul-faction that spawned and sustains the “tea party” movement. The Party that spat contempt at Paul during the Bush years and was diametrically opposed to most of his platform now pretends to share his views. Standard-issue Republicans and Ron Paul libertarians are as incompatible as two factions can be

I’m not certain I disagree. One of the largest expansions of government occurred under Bush, with Republicans cheerleading the way. Now, they seem upset that it’s not their big government.

Prior to that, a big government expansion occurred under Reagan. So take those limited government quotes with a grain of salt about the size of a Hyundai.

Quote of the Day

Judge Alex Kozinski:

Whatever may have been left of the Fourth Amendment after [United States v. Black] is now gone. The evisceration of this crucial constitutional protector of the sanctity and privacy of what Americans consider their castles is pretty much complete. Welcome to the fish bowl.
