At my small Southern Baptist university in South Carolina many years ago, some student wags took advantage of a rare snowfall to build a very lifelike snow sculpture of Dolly Parton proportions right outside the windows of the Admin building.
Several requests were made to remove the intentionally offensive snow art. The University president, a very wise fellow who knew both the perpetrators by name and that students become alumni become donors to the school, simply pointed out that the school had an Art Department with more nude art than that outside his office window, and that any offense was uncalled for, as in SC snow melts really quickly.
There is a feature of our culture that makes a contest out of seeing who can out over-react the next guy. The objective is get the police (fire dept, et al) to act, and they are all too often willing participants in the game. The practical or moral implications of this little dance are not to be considered.
