From a few books I’ve read recently, of accounts from Snipers in Iraq, it seems pretty clear that the 77gr bullets are just fine man-stoppers. I’m not sure if a caliber change is really necessary, or just a general issue of the heavier ammo along with a slower barrel twist? 77gr is marginal in a 1:9.

Mike,
Mil-Spec barrels are all 1:7 to stabilize the longer 5.56mm tracer rounds. Barrel twist is not an issue.
