I was thinking the kid was in his own room in a crib, but I thought better of it and if the crib is in dad’s room, then so what? Assuming the kid can’t get out of a crib, it’s as good as being locked behind 4 feet of steel and concrete as far as the child is concerned. I would still say he should have a GunVault or something and be smacked upside the head.

We have common sense, annnnd they have penis jokes.
I have two small children, ages 2 and 4, and I don’t leave firearms lying around their rooms. That said, this topic raises some questions for me.
Now that I have a wife and kids I have a lot more to protect, yet common sense dictates that I lock up all my guns? How unsafe is an unloaded handgun, chamber closed, with a magazine handy? My 4 yr old is not going to pick it up and perform a smack, rack, and bang.
One of the reasons I never removed the Magazine Disconnect from by Browning Hi-Power.
Before the little one was old enough to be “gun-proofed”, i.e. tranined, I could keep the weapon with a round chambered and on safe, and the magazine in my pocket when puttering around the house. Quick and easy to load mag and proceed on to business if it had ever become necessary.
Massad Ayoob has a book out called “Gun Proofing your Kids” that has a lot of good advice for those of you with tax deductions on the way.
@David: Thats why I wear mine at home as well as out and about. In my holster I have no worries about my rugrats (13, 11, and 15 months, +1 on the way) or their friends being stupid with my handgun.
I’m pretty sure no 9 month old baby is going to be racking the slide on a .45. Empty the chamber and you’re good to go. The so-called advice columnist should’ve consulted a real expert before going to print.
I stopped reading the column at “Does it have a safety latch? “.
And we won’t even discuss what difference it makes if the child has an ND with a licensed or un-licensed handgun.
Take to 10-month-old kids. Give one of them a Colt 1911 to play with and the other a 10″ chef’s knife. Which kid will hurt himself first? And, which object is more likely to be left in plain sight in one’s home without a locking device or affixed safety mechanism of any kind?

Wow.
Some of the comments are kind of amazing – I can actually /taste/ the panicky judgement.
Are 9 month olds really that mobile? (I’ve got one on the way, and reasonable information on this would be useful)
