Pentagon on Guns

Looking to adopt universal rules on how privately owned weapons are stored or carried on military installations.

  1. Tango Says:

Nothing’s going to change. They’re going to mandate that firearms on base be registered with the MP’s and they’ll leave it to the base commander’s discretion whether to allow guns or not. Same thing as it is right now, except it delegates the authority to register the handguns all the way at the top instead of at the base level.

  2. Oscar Says:

I’m about 50% with you, Tango.

The other 50% believes they’ll take the “make it more illegaler” route: ban firearms completely from post. Maybe they’ll make an exception for servicemembers who want to target practice, and who will be required to store their firearms at an armory (from which they will sign out their POF, and sign it back in when they’re done).

Or something even more stupid than this… Like shutting down all ranges to recreational use and a full firearms ban.

Disarming all soldiers: What could go wrong? Oh, wait…

  3. Jake Says:

As if any new rules would have stopped him in the first place. Does anyone really think he would have registered the gun he used even if that had been required?

This is mainly just window-dressing to make it look like they’re doing something. It’s not meant to be effective.

  4. T Says:

Registered with the MPs and locked up in an arms room is going to be my guess on the new policy. Those were the rules on Ft. Bragg many many years ago when I was stationed there. Which is why all of us kept our guns off post or concealed cleverly somewhere in the barracks.

  5. Hartley Says:

You got it, T – same rules when I went thru there, many moons ago (and lots of other places, too).

If I’m not mistaken, that terrorist at Ft. Hood was already breaking a butt-load of the existing rules for that base when he took those two pistols in there – just how the H___ does making it “more illegaller” help?

Now if one of our congress-critters would just ask the DoD that question…yeah, right.

  6. cargosquid Says:

    To summarize: Security theater.

  7. Mikee Says:

What will happen when a post commamder cowboys up and allows open carry and concealed carry of personal firearms at all times on his base? Other than possibly losing his next promotion, most likely nothing bad.

  8. Bill Says:

The current rules at Ft Hood: All firearms brought on post must be registered with the MPs. Weapons must be declared when bringing them on post. Must have your paperwork with your firearm at all times. Only police officers (military and civilian) may carry firearms on post. Soldiers carry firearms when training. Soldiers that live in the barracks must lock up their firearms in the unit arms room. Soldiers and family members that live in on-post housing may keep their firearms in their homes. No concealed carry is authorized except for police officers.

Not one of these rules would have stopped Hasan from doing what he did.

  9. John Smith Says:

    Sounds like standard USMC policy.

  10. emdfl Says:

Yeah, they wouldn’t want any more “disgruntled” doctors coming on base and shooting any infidels…

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
