    I had a rifle, a shotgun and a Ruger 10/22 stolen from my suburban Maryland home by burglars who were never caught. Three years later, the police called to tell me the rifle had been found in the woods behind my home. They also said it was a rusted mess, unusable and likely unfixable. I told them I’d been paid insurance on it, to destroy it, and they did. So I have come close to getting a free gun found in the woods, but not quite like the guy in the story.

    Considering the location, this was likely a Canadian gun runner’s stash in the US, for weapons on their way to Mexican drug cartels.

    Just out of curiosity, do found items get treated the same as found cash, when you turn them in to the police? Because with cash there is a time limit for someone to verify it is theirs and claim it; if there are no claimants then the finder gets to keep it (and pay taxes on it).

    If the guns are not traced to current owners, and are not stolen, the finder may have a jackpot on his hands, even if he just sell them on consignment.

    What guns? Where woods? I don’t know if I would have alerted the authorites. Although my screaming like a school girl upon finding them would have likely attracted their attention.
