Look twice

Remember, kids, just because you have the right of way doesn’t mean other people aren’t stupid.

Having the right of way doesn’t make you any less dead.

I once had someone in front of me (while I was driving an ambulance) turn left on red onto a 4-lane highway to get out of my way. Luckily, nothing happened, but it was still stupid.

  2. BobG Says:

I’d be curious to know how many of those idiots had their cell phone in hand when they whizzed through those red lights.

  3. Miguel Says:

The bus driver’s recovery was nothing short of a miracle. I hope there were no kids in the bus.

  4. Mad Saint Jack Says:

    Way to go./s

That will make Breda even more pissed off.

  5. liberal gun lover Says:

way to easy to get a drivers licence in this country unlike owning a gun driving a car is privilege not a right. Also every one bitches about the red light cameras, just don’t run red lights.

  6. Justthisguy Says:

Red light cameras are purely a revenue-generating mechanism for local governments and the contractors who sold that bad idea to them. Locally, there is at least one lawsuit about that, and a guy who took a stopwatch to every camera-equipped intersection, and determined that every one of them had an illegally-short yellow light.

    You fail, lgl.

  7. Robert Says:

Twice I’ve had semi’s ( at full speed ) run red lights right in front of me as I was ready to pull into the intersection after getting a green light. I always look both ways before moving once the light changes, especially here in Asheville NC where running red lights seems to be the local sport.

Thanks for posting this. Anyone who took the time to watch might come to accept how fragile we humans are and might pay a little more attention. (As a retired cop, my favorite was the bozo who ran the light when the cruiser was sitting at the light; that brought me a smile even after all these years of being retired) And red light cameras are nothing more than a revenue tool for government, anyone who believes otherwise should wait up all night to catch the tooth fairy.

  9. Ellen Says:

I had one of these accidents happen right in front of me. (Fortunately, I wasn’t involved.) It was strange, watching the pickup truck raise its rear about six feet in the air, so I had a better view of all the dirt that had been knocked off. Both of them were damn fools, I says.

  10. SPQR Says:

What was weird was how many intersections I recognized. I thought the two fire engines colliding was amusing.

  11. Mad Saint Jack Says:

This reminds me of one of my favorite lines, from Neal Stephenson’s book Zodiac, about riding a bike at night:

“That’s why I don’t even own a bike light, or one of those godawful reflective suits. Because if you’ve put yourself in a position where someone has to see you in order for you to be safe — to see you, and to give a fuck — you’ve already blown it. “

  12. Linoge Says:

Dad taught me at an early age that you can be “dead right”. Shame some of those folks had to learn the hard way.

And LGL – if red light cameras only triggered on people actually running red lights, you might have a point.

  13. dave Says:

The bus driver’s tactical maneuver was impressive. I also like how the guy at 2:51 almost gets creamed, and then walked away like nothing happened.

The near-miss at 3:11 just looks impossible. And rofl@3:34. Not only did the biker run a red light, he HIT A COP CAR. Colossal fail.

    And 6:04. Jesus Christ.

    Ok, I’m done narrating.

  14. CarlS Says:

Please. The right to drive, just like the right to own and use firearms, is not a privilege. The supreme Court said:

The right of the citizen to travel upon the public highways and to transport his property thereon, either by carriage or by automobile, is not a mere privilege which a city may prohibit or permit at will, but a common right which he has under the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”- Thompson v Smith 154 SE 579

The use of the highway for the purpose of travel and transportation is NOT a mere PRIVILEGE, but a “COMMON AND FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT” of which the public and individuals cannot rightfully be deprived. See: Chicago Motor Coach v. Chicago, supra; Ligare v. Chicago, 28 N.E. 934; Boone v. Clark, 214 S.W. 607; American Jurisprudence 1st Ed.

The “RIGHT” of the Citizen to travel upon the public highways and to transport his property thereon, by horse-drawn carriage, wagon, or automobile, is NOT a mere PRIVILEGE which may be permitted or prohibited at will, but a “COMMON RIGHT” which he has under his right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Under this constitutional guarantee one may, therefore, under normal conditions, travel at his inclination along the public highways or in public places, and while conducting himself in an orderly and decent manner, neither interfering with, not disturbing another’s “RIGHTS,” he will be protected, not only in his person, but in his safe conduct. See: 11 American Jurisprudence 1st., Constitutional Law, 329, page 1123

If you’re gonna fight for one consitutitonally-protected right, then fight for them all. Otherwise, you’re losing the war.

  15. straightarrow Says:

Amen Carl S. I suspect though, that like me, you will be shouted at by pragmatists who want to prove how “cooperative” they are.

  16. SPQR Says:

CarlS, none of your cites are to the US Supreme Court.

The US Supreme Court does recognize a constitutional right to “travel” but that is not a right to drive a vehicle.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
