Buddy of mine was on the Army Rifle team at Fort Bragg in the mid 1970’s. He told me they did a similar dry fire drill with M14’s using dimes on the barrel.
Looks like there might be a market for an electronic acceleration sensor to replace the pennies.

We used dimes on our M16s in basic. Works pretty well.

We used spent cases at the last pistol class I took.

I like when she “locks the trigger to the rear” to make sure the weapon is clear.

You can still get it to balance on the slide, or the barrel like we did in basic, just makes it even more challenging.
Just tried it on the slide on my 1911, works like a charm. Bigger coins will also up the challenge.
