So, if I understand this correctly, Colt is being paid to make FN’s guns. And FN is being paid to make Colt’s guns. Ok, then.

I thought Beretta owned both FN and Colt. Or is it FN owns both Colt and Beretta?

The level of interconnectedness among the actual firearms manufacturers would surprise a lot of people. (And when I say “actual manufacturers”, that’s because a lot of companies folks think of as “manufacturers” are actually assemblers of outsourced parts.)
A forge is an expensive thing to have sitting idle.

Well, despite my feelings towards the civilian sales side of Colt, I can say that the Colt made M16A2 I had overseas was by better by far than any FN built M16 I’ve used A2 and A4 type. Nothing in particular, but it just felt “better” for some reason, upper and lower fitted better, and overall just a tighter feeling weapon. Not to mention it shot groups on the zero range half the size of the FN ones. I miss that gun.
Never handled a Colt build M240 though.

There’s two important factors that you need to keep in mind:
1) The original designer of anything may after any period of time no longer be the sole party legally capable of production and sale of said thing.
2) Any subject with any relation to Belgium is exempt from the obligation to make sense.

one thing to keep in mind: i can’t own any of these weapons (illegal or too expensive), so i don’t give a crap.

A while back I worked in a ship trading between the U.S. East Coast and the Mediterranean.
We carried U.S. metro-style train cars to Italy, and loaded similar Italian cars for delivery to the U.S.
