Childhood gun deaths have dropped dramatically since 1970, when the National Safety Council estimated there were more than a thousand accidental childhood firearms deaths until 2009 when just 68 children under 15 died in gun accidents, gun safety training has saved thousands of children’s lives. 24,000 children’s lives.
While Helmke is correct in that you cannot prove the Eddie Eagle program has caused that decline – it is significant that those areas that have the EE program have far lower death rates than those that do not.
Harris County (Houston) Texas is a fine example. Mayor Kathy Whitmire stopped the Eddie Eagle program cold, and the incidence of childhood gun accidents increased during the remainder of her terms.
When the EE program was finally allowed, childhood gun deaths declined to near normal for the city’s demographics. That is not a rigorous proof – but it is a strong indication.
