TSA will blame the airline counter staff.
Airline will blame baggage screeners (a mix of TSA, airline and airport personnel).
Airport will blame TSA.
Everyone will get a promotion/cash award.
Cynic? Moi?
SayUncle…You are right he did forget to declare them, but I chose to ignore that as the PSHW didn’t start with departure, but destination. Course I’m not big on the needing to report bit, so on the the later issue.

And the only rule that was broke was the destination was Eygpt.
It is entertaining to watch the news when you know the truth.

Not sure about that. Doesn’t looks like he declared them.

“stashed in his checked luggage”
So, yeah TSA and the airline apparently screwed up because he didn’t declare them, but he did not get them in the cabin of the plane.
Of course, I see no reason why ccw should not be allowed on public aircraft (the faulty physics of Goldfinger notwithstanding).
I also agree TSA is more theatre than security, but let’s be clear about what happened.

Since it was checked baggage, this is PSH not Security Theater.
