Get to overriding

Governor Bredesen broke a campaign pledge a second time and vetoed the guns in bars bill.

Sound advice

For keeping your toes:

Did you know that there is no prize for being the first person with their gun back in the holster?

At the NRA Show: Tactical Solutions

One of the more innovative companies out there is Tactical Solutions. Their Pac-Lites for Ruger pistols are nice. Their SBX is an ingenious design that allows a suppressor to be put on a 16 inch barrel without having to pay the NFA tax. But I am most excited about their TSG-22, a 22LR conversion kit for Glock pistols. Gabe was gracious enough to talk with me about the kit. Here’s a video shot from the NRA convention floor:

A few things about it that I think will make it the conversion kit of choice for practicing cheaply. First, a 15 round magazine definitely makes it fun and more realistic, since your 17/22 hold more than ten rounds. Next, the steel slide so its weight is comparable to regular Glocks. It comes with Glock sights, which is not an inherent plus but it does mean it will take the various after market Glock sights. A kit for the 17/22 is coming out first, then the 19 and 23. I’d like one for my G30 but may have to get a 17 just to get one of these kits. And, bonus, a threaded barrel version for folks with suppressors.

Perhaps they should look south

In VT:

The Department of Homeland Security sees Morses Line as a weak link in the nation’s borders, attractive to terrorists trying to smuggle in lethal materials. The government is planning an estimated $8 million renovation here as part of a nationwide effort to secure border crossings.

It intends to acquire 4.9 acres of border land on a dairy farm owned for three generations by the Rainville family. Last month, the Rainvilles learned that if they refuse to sell the land for $39,500, the government intends to seize it by eminent domain.

Really? A bit of land in Vermont is where they wonder about loose borders.

Quote of the Day

AZTECRED:

When 13 year old kids are afraid to play outside, the gun controllers don’t protest in front of the gang and drug houses. They protest in front of gun stores, Starbucks, and NRA meetings.

Consistency

They have it:

US actors and liberal intellectuals joined a list to be published Friday of nearly 2,000 people accusing President Barack Obama of allowing human rights violations and war crimes.

NRA on Kagan

The WSJ:

Gun-rights advocates have started to raise concerns about U.S. Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan, possibly leading to a rockier confirmation process.

Ms. Kagan’s public record on gun rights is limited and mainly consists of positions she took as a White House lawyer in the Clinton administration and as a law clerk at the Supreme Court.

But the National Rifle Association, one of the nation’s most powerful and well-funded lobbying groups, regards Ms. Kagan’s views as “outside the mainstream,” said NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam. He said the 4.3 million-member group intends to “work with the Senate to make sure tough questions will be asked during her confirmation hearings.”

Some leading conservatives have endorsed Ms. Kagan to succeed retiring Justice John Paul Stevens; opposition by gun-rights advocates is unlikely to derail her confirmation, but it could make for a closer vote. The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to hold confirmation hearings this summer.

I want one of those with a rail on top. A Mare’s Leg in in .30-30 decked out with an Aimpoint would make a fine house gun.

Numbers

Seen at NRA Blog:

City officials estimate the convention drew close to 80,000 attendees over the weekend and brought in about $20 million dollars.

And what did the anti-gun show bring in?

The press and NRA’s meeting

NY Daily News has some good pics.

Also, it was a bit curious. In the press room was a woman. A few folks asked her who she was with and she rattled off Fox and AOL. I anxiously await seeing whatever article she writes about the convention because she never left the press room that I saw.

Speaking of Bloomberg

I went to the Lauer Custom Weapon‘s booth and checked out their stuff. Lots of things to make Bloomberg cry:

Mayor Bloomberg loosens gun laws

Realizing that they likely were on the top of the list after the McDonald case, NYC changed it’s rather draconian gun laws by relaxing them a bit. I’m guessing they realized that the laws were easy targets after McDonald, which everyone seems to think will go for the good guys. Paul Helmke agrees:

“If I were working for the mayor in New York, in the legal department particularly, I’d be saying: ‘Are we sure we can defend these laws? Are there things to do, ahead of time, that will make it easier for us to defend them?’ ” said Paul Helmke, the president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. “I would be surprised if that were not the thinking.”

Stopping Power

Babatim:

There is one more aspect to this story which I find deeply disturbing as a military professional. The SF guy whacks a 14 year old kid dead center in the chest with his main battle rifle from less than 50 yards away, and when he runs up to the vehicle the kid pops up and starts giving him shit about it? What the hell kind of main battle rifle are we using these days? Don’t get me wrong, I was very pleased to see the child survived as was the guy who shot him and everyone else involved. But when you shoot someone in the chest with a military grade rifle then that someone is supposed to go down and stay down. Whatever cartridge, barrel length, and suppressor combination that team is using is obviously less than adequate.

Quote of the Day

George:

“Well, from reading the Observer, I expected 70,000 people shouting ‘From our cold dead hands.’ But it was nothing like that. It could have been the Southern Woman’s Home Show, except with guns. Everyone was so friendly and polite. I had a nice time.”

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
