I love how many of the people who scream at the top of their lungs every chance they get that govt can’t be trusted to make a ham sandwich correctly are the same folks cheering the idea that govt will get this sort of thing right and that there won’t be abuses and ugly mistakes like this. A lot.
This is why you need the more than just the federal government doing confirmations of citizenship. Perhaps the state he is living in could have helped had they been in the loop. Sort of like how arizona will soon be. A double check system instead of the ins only system.
“I thought you were al for violating the constitution by racial profiling?”
No sir, that is your own dim view of most of us. You will find alot of us tend to belive in Liberty, for all Citizens. If you have heard otherwise, who ever told you cannot be trusted.
Important point here – there is NO registry of citizens. Do you want there to be? Think about that one for a second; cause if you can register my own pink bod, you can register a damn sight more…
ok…
1- how the hell is racial profiling unconstitutional?
2 Sean- that my be because, unlike making ham sandwiches, protecting the borders and deporting illegal aliens is one of the few things it’s SUPPOSED to do.
@ATLien – I dunno if racial profiling is per se unconstitutional. Racial discrimination is, however, as is detaining and searching without reasonable suspicion.
I’m going to keep banging on this drum – the same theories being put forth for harassing hispanics to go after the illegals can (and will, if history of government power is any judge) be used to harass gun owners “to go after the criminals”. Has, in some places. I expect to have to show papers in any interaction with the cops if I have a gun on me, and there are so many ways I could lose them if I get pulled over it’s not even funny. All because the law presumes that a firearm is illegally possessed except in certain limited circumstances. We’re at the top of a shallow slope. I don’t know how slippery it is, but the bottom is a long way away from here or anyplace I want to be, and a very dark place. I’d rather not start down the slope; thanks.
I don’t support illegal immigration – too many of my friends went through or are going through the mind-boggling hoops necessary to do it legally. I keep hearing that the problem with illegals is that they commit other crimes and mooch off our safety net. Fine – handle them like any other criminal/fraud. And remember that we don’t HAVE that registry of US citizens, that a cop in a car can easily pull up and determine if someone is a citizen or not; and that asking someone “are you in this country legally” *is* against the constitution (5th amendment, perhaps you’ve heard of it?)
