What gun for grizzly?
45 apparently. Good to know since my chances of encountering one are now greater than zero.

“Good to know since my chances of encountering one are now greater than zero.”
If you wish to not see bears, simply maintain sobriety!

.45 is right.
.45-70, that is.

You may want to add .004.

Light switch kills are hard on bears. Best shot is through roof of mouth. Caliber less important than shot placement.
And what the bear had in mind before being shot can have a large influnce on outcomes.
Hope you return safely. Stay away from dumps and your chances improve. (this incudes dumpsters behind resturants…don’t ask)

…If I’m able to shoot the bear through the roof of the mouth, I’m probably already in trouble!

Heather,
True enough. But that is still the best place to shoot the bear for a light switch kill. Or at least most of the cases I’ve read were the bear died instantly the bullet severed the brain stem at the base of the skull by entering the mouth.
How you get the bullet to intersect that point is your call 🙂
Usually if you have the need to shoot a bear, your options are already severely limited.

“The hiker fired nine shots (probably the whole magazine)………..” ‘Ya ‘tink? My choice would start a 20 and end with Warthog. Ane it would have a big GE on it somewhere.

Did you forget to take your Alaskan Survival derringer? I know you remember shooting that thing. Good thing that guy was behind you to catch it!

Really, I thought the .45 was to shoot the guy you were with in the foot so you could out run him.
One guy I knew did escape a curious grizzly by dumping his shirt which occupied the bear until they could get back in the boat.

It does seem like avoidance is your best tactic. Tim Treadwell was unavailable for comment. Probably because a bear shat him out its hiney a few years back.
If avoidance isn’t possible…me, I’d want something shoulder fired and pump action with 3″ double aughts.
