In a “may issue” locale, that is, in a “likely to reject you for no real reason” locale, documentation regarding who does and who does not get permits is useful information for the public to have.
Might keep the rejections a bit more reasonable, or might highlight egregious racism, sexism, favorititsm, etc., in the issuance of permits.
On the other hand, a list of people with guns to steal is always useful to criminals. A list of pro-self-defense civil rights advocates can be misused to discriminate in hiring and politically. So there are problems with the

I see they’ve disabled the ‘search’ function at Unc’s link, although the database file(s) are still available for download. Unc, you broke the Internet again!

Also, it should be recalled that just because someone’s name is in the NYS database, doesn’t mean they have a permit to concealed carry! Many permits are issued which only allow purchase (permit required per each pistol/revolver) and possession in the home and transport ONLY directly to and from a NY State approved ranges.
