Blaming Utah
Every few weeks, some paper does a story on how people get Utah carry permits and those are good in over 30 states. It’s that time again.

Wonder why they don’t blame Florida?

I think the difference is that this time, post Heller/McDonald, they smell the inevitable “full faith and credit” play for universal reciprocity coming, and so positioning buckets of poison near the wells is in their interest.

There was a report on Houston tv about that a few days ago. The only thing I don’t like is no range time. The checks are standard, the law and safety class is good, but they don’t fire their weapons at all. Not required.

Correct, not required. Hear about many NDs or gun-related crime out here? What about that Trolley Square shooter? Oh, he got shot by a bystander. Sure it was an off duty cop (who later turned out to be a bad guy in another scenario), but the shooter was dropped before he could do anything more.
Also, Uncle… we’re working hard here in Utah in regards to gun control! We had a 0 last year and we’re working on NEGATIVE numbers now: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/home/49849261-76/gun-utah-carry-lawmakers.html.csp

Can’t wait for more states to follow Iowa. After the 1st of the year, Iowa recognizes any other states valid permit. It even removes the proviso to concealed carry. They do recommend concealed carry to not scare the sheep, but it is not mandatory.

Must be a meme going around; WaPo has an article on Utah permits also.

I think if you get the Utah permit outside of the state from a permitted trainer, range is required. Was when I got mine (Front Sight), and a friend who used a local guy also.

“I think if you get the Utah permit outside of the state from a permitted trainer, range is required.”
Not when I did it two years ago.

Mr. Completely was going to offer one (Utah CCW class) at the Gunblogger Rendezvous this year, but I don’t think he got enough takers.

“With the Supreme Court ruling last week that the Second Amendment’s guarantee of an individual’s right to bear arms applies to state and local laws, Utah is a popular player in Americans’ efforts to legally obtain firearms.”
Interesting how they’re trying to conflate carry permits with ownership permits.

Washington doesn’t require range time either. They don’t require “law” or “safety” classes either. They don’t even require that you actually possess a gun. And it’s been that way since long before Florida “led” the passage of concealed carry laws. Have not heard anything about it being a problem.

Indiana has never required a safety class, firing at a range, or owning a gun to receive a CC permit. And now we can get a lifetime license and eliminate the time consuming reapplication process every few years.
I haven’t heard anything about accidents that can be traced to the lack of those requirements.
I’m not saying having those hoops to jump through are bad or that it doesn’t seem reasonable but it may not do as much for safety as logic would indicate. I’d like to see some solid facts and figures on that issue.
