VA permits are good for 5 years, so not yet…
Last I heard, Arlington County (not exactly the most gun-friendly place in the Commonwealth) was taking 90 days to process a permit, which is twice the legal length and illegal, so they are just letting applicants use the application as a de facto permit after 45 days. Don’t try this without contacting Arlington County courts first.
Well, the ammo markets seem to have rebounded, and are their old competitive selves again. Could be normal times again, but EBRs are still way too high-priced.
Don’t know about currently, but in 2005, Arlington processed my permit silly fast. Took them something like 4 or 5 days, as I recall. I was really surprised by how quick and friendly they were. My guess would be that if they are taking longer, now, it’s due to backlog or personnel cuts, rather than any ideological bent.
Except for the ones I bought (a Glock 19, Ruger SP-101, Ruger 22/45 and a Mossberg 500 12 ga. turkey gun), I still have the same number of guns I started with when Obama became president. No grabbing to report here. Also, scored a great deal on .38s and .22 match grade ammo in Albuquerque yesterday. Didn’t hear about the big shooting there until later.
I wasn’t trying to imply an ideological reason for the delays. You are probably right about the manpower cuts, but I think there are also a lot more people applying, still, than before 2008. I brought Arlington up more to dispute the AP story, but it is only anecdotal “evidence,” and rather poor at that. It wouldn’t surprise me if demand was down following the huge bubble in 2009.
Perhaps many are waiting for the entire gun permitting and licensing scams in all states to be declared as infringements of 2nd Amendment rights?
After all, what licensing do you need to attend a church, mosque or synagogue or to speak in public or to publish a newspaper? Wouldn’t those be “reasonable” restrictions?
Not surprised at all. Other than the concealed handgun permit Virginia doesn’t have gun permits for purchasing or owning.
We also don’t have any bars (they are all restaurants), but that didn’t stop them from calling our restaurant carry legislation the “guns in bars” bill.

When do the 2008-2009 VA permits expire? Renewals are perhaps a better measure of motivation than initial applications.

gotta love the subtle bias in the headline.
Virginia Records Show Lower Demand For Gun Permits
The first sentence says concealed handgun permits, but saying Gun Permits in the headline is telling.
