oily pelicans

A bit back, I chatted with someone about how in a few months, maybe a year, that there’d likely be negligible impact from the oil spill. Can’t quite say that yet but the environmental impact has definitely been overstated.

Well, to be fair, it’s a bit too early to say whether we know that or not. But it looks like we’re getting lucky because of the vastness and warmth of the gulf and the light nature of the oil spilled.

We’re a long way from knowing what the long term impact on fisheries will be (Valdez, AK still hasn’t recovered from a much, much smaller spill) and what the impact of the dispersants will be–but you’ll be sure to hear the Limbaughs of the world bloviating about how requiring oil drillers to use caution is creeping socialism and other such unfounded nonsense.

Who shouldn’t want to bring ship’s into the gulf? Every country has ships, why can’t they be there? To soak up the oil. Hmmmmm, what if that is not a help? But, wait, the oil is gone. Sounds like gold to me.

The assertions about Valdez aren’t supported by the facts. There is continuing research and monitoring but Prince William Sound is flourishing. Valdez itself wasn’t impacted by the oil but rather by the response, trebling in size overnight. Interestingly, the steam-cleaned beaches that were scrubbed bright, recovered far slower than those that weren’t sanitized. Seems the microbes love a good oily lunch but if they are burned off, then it takes time for a colony to reestablish. Alaska was different in that it takes forever for something to rot down up there.

Now the GOMEX is teeming with microbes and all other forms of life. All eager and well evolved to munch on oil due to the natural seepage. Three other significant spill events have happened in the Gulf since Deepwater went down. The GOMEX is ready and able to handle the spill, plus a significant hurricane event and it’ll all be scrubbed up nicely.

We do need to be concerned about the diesel powered mosquitoes that will emerge from the bayou but I’ve already seen bugs come out of there the size of toy helicopters so we’ll manage.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
