my advice is always the same, go to range that rents guns and preferably has a fair variety of them, try out each gun they have. buy ammo for the guns that “fit” their hand best, that is that are most comfortable. then shoot them and base the decision on the gun that feels most comfortable, can be easily operated, and that they can hit what they are aiming at with.
i also advise them to find a .22 cal that most closely resembles their firearm of choice so that they can practice a lot for not a lot of money. sadly, that part of the advise is generally ignored.

Your first pistol should be a .22, with a decent grip and barrel length. Just my two cents.
